Hey Everyone,
I went into labor with my DD on my own and after 36 long hours of labor I wouldnt progress past 9cm. I also was not totally effaced so I could not push. I ended up with a C-Section.
I am now 11 weeks pregnant with EDD of May 27, 2012. I asked my OB about trying for a VBAC. She said that since I went into "arrest" with my first LO then I am likely to have that happen again. She also said that they won't even consider a VBAC unless I go into active labor on my own. If I don't by 39 weeks than I will have to have another section. I can't help but feel disappointed. Ok vent over Thanks for listening.
Re: Disappointed about OB appt (vent)
Sounds like it's time to find a new provider who is VBAC friendly. It's a little hassle to change providers, but definitely worth it when you find someone who will help you accomplish your goals.
Each labor is different. Just because you stopped at 9cms last time, doesn't mean that will happen again.
My provider is giving me until 41 weeks, which is the best available in my area. So, hopefully you can at least find that.
I had a similar experience--induced, got to 9cm, was "stuck" for 6 hours, got an epi, LO's heart rate started dropping with contractions, and I was pressured into the c/s. After my 8 week post partum visit I never went back to that midwife practice.
I started interviewing new midwives at the beginning of the year and found a fantastic one, that is very VBAC supportive. She will let me go as long as I can, so long as the baby and placenta are monitored and healthy.
I would see if you can find a more supportive provider! See if you have a local ICAN chapter, or search the internet (that's how I found my midwife). Your current doctor sounds like s/he's making up excuses to not let you have a trial of labor.
Ugh. I would look for a new doctor or midwife. This one won't let you VBAC unless you go into labor by 39 weeks?? That is barely even giving you a chance--it's not even close to your due date! Very few of the ladies on this board who have had VBACs would have been able to have one with that restriction. I had my VBAC at 39w2d and we have many posters who have had them at 40 and even 41 weeks.
And lots of people have successful VBAC after arrest at 9 or 10 cm. I am one of them. I pushed for 1-2 hours with my daughter before my c/s and I had an easy fast VBAC. We have many other ladies on this board who also had a VBAC after failure to progress/failure to descend. Studies show you have at least a 60% chance of having a VBAC even if you had your c/s for that reason.
If you can't find a better doctor/midwife, then you can refuse to consent to a c/s at 39 weeks. They can't make you have one and there is no reason you can't go longer than 39 weeks for a VBAC.
Thank you SO much everyone for your advice. I think I need to look for a new provider. Although the practice is nice and I like the two doctors I have seen, they do not seem open to my birthplan. They seem so anti-VBAC. It's my body and my choice and I really want to try for the VBAC regardless of my situation with my previous DD.
Thank you Girls so much. You have made me feel a lot better and now I will make sure to take some action and fight for what I want!
