1st Trimester

Seriously, no appt. for 3 more weeks!?

Just took my first pregnancy test last night and it came back positive. Recently moved to the area and don't have an OB/GYN. Called up one recommended by a co-worker and they said their first available appointment wasn't for another three weeks! What?

What did everyone else here do - just wait to the first appointment to confirm you were pregnant? I don't know how reliable those tests are, even though they say 99 percent or whatever. I have a vague idea of when I conceived but would love to know an actual due date - help!

Re: Seriously, no appt. for 3 more weeks!?

  • The tests are very, very reliable and lots of women have to wait much longer than that for an appointment. 3 weeks seems like forever but it really isn't that long.

    Congrats on your pregnancy.

  • I won't see my OB until 10 weeks which is 5 weeks from when I figured out I was pregnant.

  • My 3 week wait for first visit will finally end on Monday.  Torturous, I know!
  • From what I've read here unless you have miscarried before and they want to keep a close watch on your pregnancy they usually schedule the first appointment around 8 weeks pregnant some not until 10 weeks. I wouldn't worry about it unless it's far after that time period then maybe think about getting another recommendation. Also the chances of a getting a false positive are slim and it increases if you are over 35. Go ahead and take another test to reassure yourself, I did! Good Luck!

  • They use the same tests at the doctor's office as what you buy at the store.  Rarely will they do a blood test.  If you conceived naturally, it's common to wait until 8-10 wks for an appt.  count yourself as lucky that you don't fall into the higher risk group that has to be seen sooner.

  • Took my positive test on 10/23 and my first appointment is not until 11/28. I see the nurse on 11/22 for bloodwork and discussing insurance. I think it is different at every office.

  • It's not uncommon. A positive home pregnancy test means you ARE pregnant. I didn't have my confirmation appointment till almost 7 weeks even though I had an established obgyn, there's just no reason they need to do it earlier unless you have some relevant history.

I did go along for blood lab tests at about 14DPO, but you usually don't need an actual appointment for those, they're just labs.

  • Yep, the HPTs are very reliable. If you got a positive, you're pregnant! With my previous pregnancies I had my 1st appointment around 8 weeks, and with this one it was at 10 weeks. Don't worry, time will pass!

  • My first appt was 3 weeks and 2 days after I got positive pregnancy tests.  My OB doesn't typically do blood work until the first appt which is at 6-8 weeks of pregnancy (typically at least 2 weeks after the positive pregnancy tests).

This.  I've been in twice already for labs, but that's because I've had two losses and they are monitoring my hcg this time.  With DS, I had a positive HPT at 4 weeks and didn't go in until 8 weeks.  The waiting sucks, but 8-10 weeks for the first appt is common practice.  Congrats and GL!

  • Thank you so much everyone - I feel so much better!!! But will I be able to convince my husband? (who said if I can get an appointment anywhere tomorrow within a 24-hour radius we would drive there through the night.)

Little over anxious. He's really, really excited. Big Smile

  • At my dr.'s office they dont even see the Dr until your third visit! Well...you see the nurse first - who just confirms that you're pregnant, the second visit is a paperwork pushing appointment with someone else - and then finally you get the Dr the following week...when I see my Dr. I'll be 9 weeks. It's a long time to wait to hear the heartbeat and confirm all is well in there....but I have never had any complications and I know that a lot of mom's wait for their first appointments too.  Hope you have a happy & healthy 9 months.

  • I was about 7 weeks along when I called my doctor and my first appointment is on the 15th.  I will be about 10-11 weeks.

  • I am 5 weeks now, I found out this past weekend that I was pregnant. I, like you, am new to this area and didn't have any other Dr. besides my primary care. I had to go to my Dr. to POAS before they could recommend me to an OB. I have my first appointment scheduled for Nov. 30th, when I will be 8 weeks along. The nurse said I won't meet with the Dr. at this visit, just with a nurse to go over family medical history, prenatal vitamins and whatnot. I made the appointment on Tuesday so three weeks seems so far away! Hopefully it goes by fast!!

  • Most doctors want you to wait that long because they want to be able to make sure they see something on the U/S (if you get one).  If you go too early, there won't be anything for confirmation besides a positive pregnancy test (which you already have).  I went in around 6 weeks (2 weeks after my positive test) and it was very hard to see anything, so they had be come back in a week anyway to confirm!  So it sounds right on target!

  • When the first time I got my BFP I couldnt hardly believe it, DH was even in shocked and didnt know what to say, so I figure its probably a false alarm or chemical pregnancy. The same night I talked to one of my friend that is actually a PA, I told her about my BFP and that I dont believe I'm pregnant and I might be only having chemical pregnancy.

She said that HPT never lies, if you have BFP then you are pregnant, sometimes its giving you BFN but you turns out to be pregnant thats when HPT is wrong, if its positive then its positive. She also said through out the entire time she been PA, 5+ year she only seen 20% case of chemical pregnancy, it is so uncommon. Sometimes people are mistaken about chemical pregnancy and early MS.

Sorry TMI, but just sharing based on what you have you are definitely pregnant.

And about waiting for 3 weeks, I have my 1st doctors appointment on 12/14 and I'm 4 weeks along, so I'm anxiously waiting for another 4/5 weeks to see my OB GYN.

  • I found out on Nov.1 and my first appt isn't til Dec.1. I was just thinking today how I still have 2.5weeks before I learn my due date! I normally would not care but I am in a wedding the first week of Aug, so I am really hoping it is July 1st at the latest. Good luck waiting. I know it seems like FOREVER!

  • As PP have said, unless you've miscarried before or are bleeding now, most doctors won't see you until you're around 8 weeks.

What's getting me through is knowing that if I were to go before 8 weeks, there wouldn't really be anything to see/ hear, because the baby would be too small. And without being able to see baby, the doctor won't be able to give any more accurate EDD than simply counting 40 weeks from you're last period.

  • It's common practice at my hospital to not have the appointment until 8-12 weeks along. My first appt with DD was 10 weeks. At that point they did an ultrasound to date the pregnancy because I had just come off BC and wasn't sure of my dates.

Honestly, a line is a line. You're pregnant, and the hospital pee tests are exactly the same as what you just used.

  • We got a positive test at 4 weeks (10/15) and our first doctors appointment was yesterday (11/11). Its actually very common to not be seen until 7/8 weeks. There really isn't too much to see beforehand.
