WWYD?

Okay, so this may be a post and run, I gotta shower, but i'll be back!

I bought DS a summer infant monitor from babies R Us and just took it out of the box to start using about a week ago. When I did I noticed the screen that you see the baby on was cracked and broken.

I called Babies R us, they said they would send me a new one and to send the old one back or else I would get charged a second time. A few days later I got the new one, and dropped of the old one at UPS.

Two days ago I got an email saying I was going to get refunded the amount of the monitor because they had recieved the old one I sent back. I thought it was a fluke, because it seems like companies never make mistakes in your favor, its always over charging.

Today, I looked and sure enough we got the money reimbursed from the monitor. Should I call and tell them the money isn't ours? keep it and be happy? or what?

Nothing has never happened like this before, and I know the right thing to do would be to return it.. right?! Stick out tongue

Re: WWYD?

  • I know it's tempting, but the right thing to do is return it. This is your chance to be an example, even if the one you're being an example for is too young to know it. :)

    I would return the money.

  • This sounds like good CS to me. They sent you a new one, and refunded you the $ for it because you got a broken one and had to wait for a new one.

    Let this one go.

  • I would keep the money and spend it on an angel tree kid's Christmas present, the big corporation won't miss it... but you can make a LO's Christmas!
  • I would call them. I wouldn't be surprised if they just tell you to keep it, but I'd feel better knowing that I asked.

  • I love the idea of donating it, especially if it went towards other children's Christmas's. If I did that, could babies r us down the road realize they made an error and re-charge me?

*I would give the money back in a heartbeat to someone if they dropped it on the street, I'm not a dishonest person, but something about the larger corporations just makes me feel slightly less bad. I would love to donate it. I still have to talk to DH about it tonight. Nothing like this has ever happened to me.

  • I don't know that I would be able to handle the guilt if I didn't call...

  • I always call when there appears to be an error, but I also ran an e-commerce biz myself so I feel like it's good karma to do so.  Actually, I think I've always been this way.  I don't understand not calling b/c in my head it's pretty black and white and the same as stealing (just like lying by omission is still lying, even though they may very well tell you to keep it (I have done this b/c shipping and restocking weren't always worth it depending on the item).  Just do the right thing vs. trying to justify doing the wrong thing by donating it to a charity instead.

    This.

  • They may very well catch their mistake.  This recently happened to me with VS yoga pants.  They refunded my money AND sent a new pair and then I got an email the next day saying they'd made a mistake and would be taking the money back.

Personally, I'd call and say something.

  • Thanks ladies for the replies.. I talked to my mom, and my husband. I will be calling in the morning and telling them what  has happened. If they don't take my money back, I will donate it. But I highly doubt that they will let me keep it!
