So tonight we're heading out to celebrate our anniversary at a local fondue spot. Anyone hear if this is safe when pregnant? Seriously, what could be better than cheese and chocolate? Any thoughts welcome.
We went to the Melting Pot on Saturday for Hubby's birthday and it was *awesome*. Most of the cheeses used for fondue are cheddar, swiss or other aged or pasturized cheeses. I'd only worry if you're having Brie as an appeititzer.
We did the 4 course dinner and I just made sure all my meat was cooked throughly. I'm allergic to seafood so that wasn't a concern for me. If you'll be having seafood just make sure it's cooked all the way through. The nice thing with fondue is that it's really hard to over cook your meat/seafood when you're cooking in broth.
If it's the Melting Pot that you're going to I strongly recommend the seasonal Boston Lager Cheddar fondue (YUM!) and the Flaming Turtle chocolate fondue. Just thinking about it makes me want more....

Well I am so happy for you and your celebration with your husband I am now extra sad for me. I have craved fondue so bad during my pregnancy and have not been able to get it one time Please enjoy an apple dipped in cheese for me.
the cheese is heated so I don't think i'd be worried about it. SOmetimes they put kirschwasser (alcohol) in the cheese but I'm pretty sure the heat kills the alcohol. If you are worried, ask them not to add it. When you choose the chocolate fondue, just make sure to pick one that doesn't have alcohol in it because they don't boil the chocolate. Same thing for the meat... get traditional rather than coq au vin cooking style to avoid alcohol. You'll be fine.

Alcohol really isn't a worry when it comes to fondue. They usually light the alcohol on fire for the chocolate fondue which burns all the alcohol off and leaves the flavor of the liquor behind so it's not really a worry. Coq au vin is made using red wine and is heated to a rolling boiling so all the alcohol gets cooked off.
The only time you'd really need to worry about alcohol still being in the food is in the cheese fondue as it's not usually heated as hot as the broth/oil used to cook meats and the alcohol usually isn't lit on fire as it is in the chocolate fondue. I just had cheese fondue at the Melting Pot and was made with beer but I didn't worry one bit. The amount of residual alcohol left in the food would have been minor. If it's that concerning one could always ask that it be omitted.
