Babies: 6 - 9 Months

BLW Fail?

We have only been BLW for about a week now. We started first with banana and she did great for the first 2 or 3 days. She mostly just sucked on it but managed to get down a few little pieces. I did see some evidence in her diaper for a couple of days. Yay! Then we moved on to avocado for a couple days and she did about the same. But now, for the last couple of days she has been totally uninterested. She will barely even pick it up, let alone put it to her mouth. She just squishes it in her hand and puts it down. Once she destroys the avocado I put a little of it on her spoon and hand it to her and she sucks it off, but she would suck the spoon whether there was food on it or not. I wondered if maybe she was already bored with her options of banana and avocado so I tried some sweet potato fries last night. Those were an epic fail but I think it was my fault. I don't think I cooked them long enough so they wouldn't mush up in her mouth and I also cut them too skinny so they just broke off in her mouth. There was a lot of gagging and I think that was about it. She did seem slightly more interested in those though.

So I guess I'm just looking for a little insight from some of you who are further along. Is it possible that maybe she's just not ready yet? Should we take a break and try again in a week or two, or is this just how it goes in the beginning? Any thoughts you might have would be very much appreciated. Smile

Re: BLW Fail?

  • How old is she?

Sometimes LO is in the mood to put things in his mouth. Most of them get spat back out at me. So far, his favorite has been the mum mums... not quite the unprocessed food I'd like him to like, but it was nice to see him eat something.

Anyway, I think it's very normal for interest to come and go, and some babies don't really start to eat until 7 or 8 months, or longer.

  • How old is LO? How close to a bottle/nursing session do you do it? DS isn't interested in solids if it has been less than an hour since he nursed. Some days he loves solids others he just fools around. Since solids right now aren't for nutrition and just to get used to eating I don't mind. He is 7 months tomorrow and still has days where he just isn't into it.

  • Keep at it, foods right now are for exploration.  My DD played with a lot of the food when we first gave it to her (makes for great pictures).  After about 2 weeks she figured out that she could eat everything and she hasn't stopped since.  She loves carrots and spaghetti (no sauce yet...I'm not ready for that mess).

  • This is interesting because we started with sweet potato fries, and I feel like it's he banana and avocado that are the fails. Banana and avocado are so mushy he hardly gets any in his mouth. The first week or so the was more gagging with the finger shapes, but now he understands how far to put food in his mouth. No gagging for a few days now. Did you read the book? It really helped me feel more confident.

  • I think the first rule to remember is that food under one is just for fun.  I would still try different things, and just put it on the tray. If they eat it, they eat it and if they don't it's not a big deal.  Maybe your LO is bored, but eventually LO will get curious enough to eat what you are eating.  Just keep trying different things and your LO should come around eventually.

  • Thanks so much for all the responses. It's nice to hear that other LO's interests come and go. I think I just needed to hear one or two "keep going!" Smile

To answer a couple of questions... DD is 6 1/2 months old. She is very interested in what we eat and grabs at it if she is in our laps. I usually give her food during our dinner time, which is about 3 hours since her last bottle (1 hour before bedtime). Some days this is her crabby time of day so I was thinking that it could just be bad timing for her, but I've also done it in the middle of the day a couple times with about the same result. I am currently reading the book. I'm about half way through it, so I need to keep going with that too.

Thanks again for the responses and encouragement mamas! We will keep experimenting. Smile
