December 2011 Moms

I can't be the only one..

two things that are very strange to me..

the first - my OB office does not check for dilation EVER. Unless there is an issue (ex:bleeding, watery discharge..) i've never heard of this, and everyone i've ever asked, and asked lately gets checked. is there anyone out there who is not getting/won't be getting check at all, ever?

the second - i keep having this weird cold feeling in my throat when i lay down. my chest (upper) kind of hurts slightly and it makes me want to vomit. it's not like an upset stomach. anyone else?!

TIA

Re: I can't be the only one..

  • it's actually not necessary to check you for dilation before you're in labor.  My office does checks, but I have heard of others that don't

the second sounds like heartburn/acid reflux.  try some Tums before you lay down

  • My doctor told me they won't check me unless I want them too. I'm good not getting checked until I'm at least over due.

  • No comment on the cold feeling. As far as cervical checks - I won't get by with none, but my OB doesn't start them until 39 weeks.
  • My OB never checks me either. I think the plan is to do a culture at week 37. I'm sure there might be a check then...but otherwise I'd only get checked if I was having contractions or bleeding. I've always kinda thought it was odd too. It's been forever since my last u/s too. I always feel like everyone else here knows so much more about what's going on with their bodies than I do. So...you aren't the only one.

I've been having chest pains a bit too. It's not always when I lay down. It hits me out of no where sometimes. It's like a cold breeze takes my breath away. It doesn't make me want to vomit though. It does force me to sit down and sometimes I see spots.

  • My Dr. only starts checking for dilation at 37/38 weeks.  She checked me this week, but only because I have been having "wake me up at night" cramps.  Needless to say, cervix is closed.

  • My OB never checks either. I will be having one internal exam at 36 weeks to make sure baby is head down & then after that I won't have any until I am in labor at the hospital.

As for the chest feeling, I agree with a PP, sounds like acid reflux. It sucks...trust me. Try some tums and if it still bothers you, ask your doctor for some heartburn medicine.

  • My Dr doesn't check unless you ask. She said it is not necessary.

  • My OB doesn't do them either unless requested.

  • i feel so relieved! when i told some of my friends/family about not being checked, and no plans to check they were really starting to scare me. i've also never urinated for my OB either.. which i've heard is weird too. i really love where i go, but i want to make sure i'm getting the right treatment too.  so i'm happy to know that it's not just me!!

i've never had acid reflux/heartburn before, so i don't/didn't know what it feels like - but you can bet i'm going out to get some Tums. thank you ladies soooo much!

  • 1. I won't be getting checked until I'm in labour. By my midwives anyway. I did have DH check a couple days ago since I was having a ton of pressure and contractions but alas there was nothing. Internals are pretty uncomfortable so I'm fine with not being checked until labour. Hell I don't even want to be checked in labour.

     2. It's probably heartburn. Ditto pp try some tums before laying down. Try not to go too long between snacks or meals as it will be worse.

  • Concerning the internal exam: You're not missing a thing. I could certainly do without them.

  • I haven't experienced the cold feeling in my throat, but there are times when I feel more pressure on my chest depending on how I lay.  I wonder if that would somehow cause a cold feeling for you.  I dont' know.

My OB will do cervical checks every week from now on (had my first check at yesterday's 36 week appt).  I'm really not sure why they check though because I've heard someone can be dilated for weeks before actually going into labor.  It just makes me more anxious because I know as soon as she tells me I've started dilating I'm going to get more antsy than I already am.  At this point my cervix is shut tight, but soft.

  • I'm not getting checks. I will probably have ONE when the do the GBS test since they're there anyways, but other than that, my MW doesn't do tem unless I ask or there's cause for concern. I also plan on declining checks during labor unless I request them.

I had a weird sensation like that too. It almost feels like when I lay down I've swallowed a big pill that got stuck in my chest. Not too painful, not burning, but uncomfortable and made me nauseous and short of breath. I have no idea what it is.

  • the chest/throat thing is called GERD.

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a condition in which the stomach contents (food or liquid) leak backwards from the stomach into the esophagus (the tube from the mouth to the stomach). This action can irritate the esophagus, causing heartburn and other symptoms.

i just started getting it around 31 weeks. yuck! its horrible. the only thing that seems to help is peppermint tums, and cold milk. if you start feeling the nauseous feeling try drinking a glass of milk, its supposed to help calm any acid. try to stay away from acidic foods (tomatoes, citrus, etc.) and see if that helps. also try not to lay down right after eating.. that hasn't really helped me, but i know some people find it helpful. good luck!

I don't get checks, and only have had my urine tested at the first appointment too.  I do see a MW group, but it's CNMs based in a large teaching/research hospital with a big focus on evidence-based care, so it's not a hippy MW thing either :-)

  • I haven't been checked either and my OB hasn't mentioned it ever.  However, I do have to pee in a cup at every single appointment!

  • I have heard of several doctors that don't do them unless necessary.  I have no idea if my doctor does them in a normal pregnancy or not.  Due to my low fluid issues, she has started checking me at 35 or 36 weeks because we need to know how I'm progressing in case I need to be induced earlier than expected.

My Dr. hasn't mentioned it yet either so I may ask what they typically do when I go this afternoon.

I pee in a cup every appt too.  They check all of their patients for infection and proteins in the urine.

My OB doesn't start till after 38 weeks. I'm fine with that. They tell you nothing really.

  • My doctor doesn't do checks either unless there is a reason- a problem. I don't have that feeling when laying down. My doctor said that - if you lay flat your uterus compresses venous blood return and can make you sick- my doctor told me to always lay on your left side when possible. . .
