What age for tricycle?

DH would like to get DD a tricycle for Christmas. At 18 mos, I think she's a little young for pedals but might be OK with a ride-on bicycle (no pedals). She has the FP ride-on lion and doesn't use it often.

Any advice/suggestions?

Re: What age for tricycle?

  • I still think DD is too young at 2.  We let her on a Radio Flyer one and, although she could reach the pedals, she didn't grasp the concept of what to do.  Then again, she was only on it for a minute.  I think 3 is a better age, but that's just my opinion.  It's the same with her Power Wheels.  She just started really riding it at 2, but we got it for her last Christmas :).

  • I'd say 2 1/2 to 3 years old. My parents got DD a tricycle when DS#2 was born and she was 16 mths at the time and just wanted to be pushed around on it. Now at nearly 2 she is starting to grasp the idea that she can move it herself but she doesn't quite have the coordination to actual pedal. I suspect that she will have it all figured out in a few months and maybe by then she'll actually be tall enough to reach the pedals Stick out tongue

  • They make Radio Flyer tricycles with a parent push-handle. I think that might be a good option for you?

  • To spin off what auntie said, I've read that kids are ready to pedal when they can go up and down stairs alternating their feet, like adults do. (not one at a time like when they're learning).  It makes sense, because it is tied to the ability to alternate the use of their feet/legs.
  • Is your child more of as motor skills kid or a verbal skills kid?

Our DD received a trike for her second birthday in March.  She was pedaling around the 4th of July and was really really good at riding (Zooming around obstacles and in tight spaces at at fast speed) by September.   (so she was 2 years 4 months when she was able to pedal).

DD has always been a motor girl--she crawled at 5.5 months and walked at 10 months but she was delayed verbally.  DD's early intervention coordinator was really surprised to see her riding her trike this summer.  The coordinator said they don't even look for that skill until closer to 3 years old.  So I guess it just depends on what kind of child you have.  If your DC quickly learns motor skills, they might "get it" earlier.  If your DC has split skills or seems to be  more verbally focused, then they probably won't enjoy a trike for a while.

(BTW--the past poster is right--Katy started pumping her legs on the swings right about the same time.  Our babysitter jokes that she would like Katy to teach the 3 year olds how to do this, too.)

  • DD will be two in February and we've been using the Radio Flyer tricylce with parent push-handle. She seems to really like it but she can't pedal yet.
  • We got our DD a tricycle just before turning 2 and she still cant figure it out and she will be 3 in Feb.  I would say wait until 2 1/2-3 to get one.
  • We also have the Radio Flyer tricylce with parent push-handle. The parent push handle removes so it will become a regular tric when he is older & can push the pedals himself.

  • Definitely by 2 1/2.  Maybe wait until next year (Christmas) and she'll be just the right age.  Our DS doesn't have one yet.  He'll be almost 3 next summer so that is when he'll get one (probably for Easter).  I do remember my oldest DD riding a regular tricycle when she was 2 1/2.  Her birthday is in January and it was summer and we were still living in a townhouse.  The others...I don't remember (how time flies :(
