TV and LO your thoughts...

I'm just curious what you guys think about letting your LO watch TV?

Re: TV and LO your thoughts...

  • Honestly, my LO doesn't seem to be interested in TV yet because she is more interested in tracking me down so I could never just let her watch it. However, she seems to watch a little yo gabba gabba, barney and sesame street but her attention span to these shows are like 2-5 mins and then she becomes disinterested. Sooo I don't think that's a big deal, I don't let her watch cartoons or Nick jr stuff except ygg.

I am concerned that she is in front of the TV (background tv) a lot at my Aunt's place though because every time I go there, the TV is always on. She never leaves LO by herself but I think when she is watching her soaps and what not, LO is there (she watches the Indian channels only). I don't like the TV on all the time, and I didn't have a TV until DH moved in so I am not a big TV person. I would like to bring it up with my Aunt but DH thinks I am too picky and thinks I should basically keep my opinions to myself because it's my Aunt's place......:(

  • I voted SS. I don't purposely put the tv on for DD but it is on most of the day. We don't watch kids shows - we don't even get those channels. Honestly, she hardly even looks at it now that the novelty has worn off. She does enjoy watching H play car racing games and we watch other sports live (she loves hockey, football, and cars) but to me those aren't bad things to watch. I don't consider sports to be mindless tv. We want her to be athletic/active.

  • My LO has absolutely no interest in the TV.  DH recorded Sesame Street for him and he couldnt care less.  We finally took it off the DVR list.

  • I have nothing on during the day except kids shows.  Cooper will sit and watch one show "Jungle Junction" like its going out of style.  He laughs and smiles the whole time..I don't think I could take that away from him.  I guess he is going to grow a third arm.

  • TV is on most of the day but neither of my kids pay any attention. DH always turns Nick Jr on for DS in the morning but he just lays there to wake up. If we pause the TV he doesn't care so I know he's not paying attention. It'd be nice if DS would watch one little 30 minute show, but I'm glad they would rather play than be glued to the TV.

  • If it were up to me, we wouldn't have a TV. But DH has to have the TV on whenever he is home. So, he gets some TV with daddy and none with mommy. We did agree that if it is on, then it needs to be child centered of child friendly ( no adult content). But I have been fighting the no TV until 3 battle for a while. Last night DH turned it off without me asking. So we are making progress.

  • There are a bunch of recent studies which suggest more than 2 hours of tv a day has a link to ADHD diagnosis, but whether it's causative, correlative, etc is another story.  Regardless we usually try to play it safe and draw a hard line at 2 hours.  And Joaquin watches Jeopardy with us every night, lol.  She gets super excited and flails her arms and stuff.  She is SO BAD at bidding though.

  • My LO prefers to watch her sister running around or play with her own toys VS watching TV. Occasionally I will but on a tv show about the creates in the ocean. It is very colorful & has a lot of music that she likes.

My oldest likes to watch shows like, Yo Gabba Gabba, Wonder Pets, Blues Clues, Dora, etc. But we never let her watch it all day! She prefers to color, paint, read, chase after her kitten or take away her sister's toys...

My husband & I I don't watch much TV either. He's always at work & I have no time, or energy.

  • In my ideal world, LO was not going to watch ANY tv, because I was going to be that awesomely perfect of a mom.  Smile  In reality, the only way we used to be able to get ready for work in the morning was by entertaining him with Cat in the Hat.  Lately he could care less about the tv.  We don't purposely put anything on for him, but I will also not stroke out if he watches a little bit.

  • haven't put her in front of it with a kid's show yet, but if she pays attention to what is on that we are watching, I just try not to let it last more than a minute or two and then I re-direct her to her toys.  But in general she isn't that interested in it yet, that I can tell...
  • If I have the TV on, its usually child-centered. JT enjoys some Sesame Street, Yo Gabba Gabba, and he loves Moose A. Moose when he comes on for Puzzle Time. And Barney - but he'll pay attention for a few minutes then goes about his business. Definitely don't reach 2 hours that I know of. I actually try to turn the TV off as often as I think of it but I forget and it's usually background noise.

However, my DH puts stuff on all the time and it's never child-centered or child-friendly. I've asked him to watch what he puts on but that lasted all of one day. It's usually UFC fighting, boxing, Gangland, oh Lord...it's bad. He needs to watch out cause one day JT is going to know what's going on!

Guess I need to speak to him about this again soon.
