Hello. I had my second D-IUI about two and a half weeks ago. This afternoon my RE confirmed that I am pregnant. The nurse who called told me that my doctor wanted to place me on estrogen supplementation. She gave no reason. Obviously, my estrogen has to be low. She called in the prescription. I picked it up and found that I have been prescribed 60 estradiol tablets to be taken twice daily. When the pharmacist gave them to be she indicated the they were not to be taken while one is pregnant. I am totally confused.
The nurse who called in this prescription gave me no further instructions. Will they be monitoring me while I take this and the progesterone they gave me two weeks ago. Some of the side effects look nasty. Do I call my regular OBGYN? When she first called me I didn't have the number for the pharmacy to I said I would call her back. I just assumed she would be telling what I need to do from here.
Any help or advice would be much appreciated. I'm kinda lost right now.
Re: RE just confirmed pregnancy.....have a question
Hello,
I am a pharmacist, it is a standard warning not to give estrogen in pregnancy. However, with fertility treatments estrogen is usually needed. I am currently on delestrogen injections. We need to make sure that the lining is kept lush so that the embryo can grow. The pharmacist was correct that in unassisted pregnancies it is not recommended.
They always have to give you that warning for any extra hormone supplements during pregnancy. Your RE knows what they're doing and it's common to supplement either estrogen, progesterone, or both early in pregnancy. I would recommend following their advice.
ETA: Totally forgot to tell you -- congratulations!

My RE has me on estridol twice a day too. She said it was important for supporting pregnancy after fertility treatments.

Thanks everyone. Now for a follow up question, the nurse who called me didn't tell me what I am supposed to be doing now. This is my first experience with an RE. Am I done seeing her now? Do I call my regular obgyn? How long do I take these supplements for, both the estrogen and the progesterone. My doctor is not very good at explaining stuff. I've only actually seen her in person once. Nobody advised making another appointment after this one blood test to confirm.
Mine and DH's situation is a little different. We have the genes for cystic fibrosis and cannot conceive without aid because of the risk of having a child with the disease. We did natural cycles with no fertility medications. So, I was thinking this is the reason I was not told to make follow up appointments because we don't have an infertility diagnosis?
I guess I should call tomorrow. She has the rudest receptionist. I have to make sure I ask my question in the most concise way possible or the receptionist yells at me...lol.
