GD Mommies on Insulin

Hi Ladies!

 This is my first post on this board.   I just got back from my GD appointment to start insulin and I am so scared!!!!!   I feel so overwhelmed and really just want to have the baby today so I can get this little hump behind me.

I have to give myself 2 insulin injections daily - one before bed (18 units) and one during the day (10 units).   I'm ok with the one during the day but the one before bed is scaring me because I don't want to have a "low" in the middle of the night.   The dietian told me to have a snack (high fat) after I have my pm dose and that will help avoid the possibility of a low.   I think its just the thought of having a low that gets me so scared.

Any thoughts or experiences would be greatly appreciated.   Even any snack ideas that will help me get through the night will be great.

  • I'm guessing that the dose they gave you for bedtime is the long-acting insulin.  Just make sure you eat a good bedtime snack and you should be fine.  Also, keep something like glucose tabs or a can of soda near your bed, along with your glucometer.  If you wake up feeling funny, just test your sugar.  If it's low, pop the glucose tablets or drink half the can of soda and then check again in 15 minutes.  Apparently hypoglycemia in pregnancy is supposedly below 60, but I know I start feeling a little funny in the low 70s, so just see what your body tells you.  

    If it makes you feel any better, I take 46 units of insulin at bedtime and I have never had an overnight low.

    As for snacks: I like the VitaBrownie with some peanut butter and some milk, I have a low-carb cheesecake that I love to have at bedtime, sometimes I have an apple with cheddar cheese or peanut butter crackers.  You'll find something that works for you.

  • First I want to say that I know how you feel. I felt the same way when I first start going through this. It does get better as you go along. Last weekend I finally had a real break down about having GD. I think before I was just in shock and just never reacted. I feel a little better now, but I am still worried and just want her to come as soon as possible so I can get over this part.

    I am currently on 15 units in the morning and 25 in the evening. I am finding that my evening numbers do not want to come down. Usually my blood sugar before bed time and first thing in the morning are not too far apart. My blood sugar does not seem to drop really low over night. I agree with the PP. If you numbers are really low in the morning call you doctor and tell them. They can decrease your night insulin.

     I have been a type 1 diabetic, on insulin for 20 years (I am turning 32 tomorrow).  I gave birth to a beautiful baby boy a year ago so try not to panic or worry.  I know this is a transition for you but it is a minor bump in the road.  

    As far as having a low at night.  If you are truly concerned, set your alarm.  It is not the most restful night sleep but it will keep your mind at rest.  I would suggest setting it for two hours after you fall asleep.  You can wake up quickly, test your BG and see where your numbers lie.  Then you can feel confident that your snack is either sufficient for you or you need to bulk it up.  Also, you will sleep more sound knowing that you have a check in point.  From the time I found out I was pregnant with my son I woke up every 2 hours almost every night.  It may sound crazy but it made me feel in control and 9 months is such a short time for such an amazing and long term gift.  

    Dealing with any form of diabetes can be overwhelming and scary especially when you are caring for another but you are doing what is necessary to keep both you and your baby healthy and your concern means your going to be a great mommy!

    Thank you so very much!!  Last night was ok although I didn't sleep much because I was worried.  I do feel that my snack held me through the night - they suggested 1 c. regular ice cream and almonds.   I didn't wake up hungry this morning but I am thinking I may take your suggestion just for piece of mind :)   It's just something new that I need to get used to.  Thanks again!!

  • If you are having ice cream, may I make a suggestion?  Instead of eating the almonds as the protein, warm up a good scoop of peanut butter (the microwave is fine), then pour it over the top of the ice cream like a sundae topping!  It is a delicious way to get your protein.  You can do it with almond butter, too.

    Ok....you just toally made my day!!  I would of never thought of heating up peanut butter and putting it on the ice cream.   That is my one summer weakness - peanut butter sundaes!!!  I'm so excited for tonight now :)
