re: potty training--how do you cut a kid off all liquids?

we usually send the boys to bed w/ a water sippy on their night stand b/c they get parched apparently.  This ensures they're going to wake up wet b/c they guzzle it and then ask for more.  Seriously, through the monitor I heard Coop crying the other night (~2a), went in to find out what was wrong and he said he was out of water and he needed it.  I thought he'd broken an arm, he was crying so bad.

Anyway, if we want any kind of success at PTing, how the eff are we supposed to get them to not want water at bed time?  I've been lessening the amount I've given them at bed time, but they always ask for more.  Always.

If they're thirsty, am I a jackass for not giving them more?  I can't be strong in this area.  Help me.

  • I think it's just a habit, I really don't think they're that thirsty if you hydrate them properly throughout the day.  We give DS as much milk as he wants with dinner.  Then at bedtime, he gets a TINY amount of water in a cup.  We started with half a cup, and cut back and back until we were just giving him a sip.  Sometimes he throws a shitfit about it, but I think you just have to stand your ground.

ETA: DS isn't night trained yet, either, and still wears a diaper.  Some mornings he wakes up completely dry, other times he's peed during the night.  But I knew in order to get to the night training, we'd need to knock off the habit of wanting a big drink before bed.

  • I have no idea.  I've been extremely lucky because both my kids were night trained before day.  Layna's been waking up with a dry diaper for months now but just potty trained in the last month.  Jakob was the same way.  And they both sleep with water bottles, always have.

I think you need to figure out if they're actually peeing at night or just after waking up.  If they pee throughout the night, then screw the nighttime and just keep a diaper on them.  I know plenty of almost 4 yr olds who still sleep in a pull up.

  • maybe you don't have to??? DD is trained completely and still gets a sippy of water every night. and she freaks out if she can't find it in the middle of the night. she used to freak that there wasn't ice in it in the middle of the night, but we've luckily broke the have to have ice habit.

do they have access to the bathroom in the middle of the night if they needed it? DD's bathroom is attached to her room. i just leave the door cracked with a nightlight and she can go use it by herself when and if she needs to.
