I am trying to figure out if DC can go straight from a crib to a twin bed (with a guard) or if they need to be in a toddler bed first. This will help determine the type of crib I get now.
They can do whatever you want them to do! DD's crib converted to a toddler and then a full size bed. We skipped the toddler phase and went straight to the full bed with a rail. Super easy. The toddler bed seems pointless to me.
A lot of people do it. B's crib converts to a toddler bed but the way the bed is in her room it's essentially just a twin bed pushed against the wall, it doesn't have a guard on one entire side.

Our cribs went to toddler beds and from there we put them in twin beds. The twins only spend a few months in the toddler beds so we could use one for the younger guy.
My older kids went from a crib to a 3/4 bed (used to be my DH's). It is actually between a full-size bed and a twin. Harder then heck to find sheets for (had to buy really, really, really cheap ones and shrink them). It was fine and we never even used a railing. I think I put pillows along one side and the wall was on the other side.
