Natural Birth

Epi don't!

My birth plan was to go natural.  My OB was on board with me but suggested that if it looked like I was going to be in labor for a long time that I might want to consider an epidural.  I started to labor at about 3:30pm.  My husband and I went to a family party and then went home.  At about 2am we went to the hospital.  I was 5cm.  I got all situated.  We brought some music with us.  When the dula at our birthing class suggested this I thought she was nuts but I have to say I loved it.  It calmed me and made me focus.  I did my breathing and all of that.  At about 5am they asked if I wanted an epidural.  I had been in labor for a while.  I was only 7cm.  So I said lets try it.  I could use some sleep.  WORST MISTAKE OF MY LIFE!  They tried to get the needle in for 45 MINUTES!  I finally said just stop.  They broke my water after that and LO was born at 8:18am after 20minutes of pushing.  The reason I say the epidural try was the worst mistake is because...the only thing I didn't want to happen, the whole reason I didn't want an epidural....I got a spinal headache!  They didn't know what was wrong with me in the hospital.  They thought it was from pushing.  The pain was so bad I couldn't even enjoy my son for the first 3 days of his life.  And in order to get rid of the headache they have to restick your spine.  Instead of the medication they have to put your own blood in there.  So stick to your birth plan ladies!  I think natural is the way to go.  Plus I don't think it was as bad as everyone made it out to be.  It is all worth it for that little baby!

Re: Epi don't!

  • We did the music with our twin delivery and it was so much more fun and relaxing. I had a whole relaxation playlist set up but we ended up just listening to my favorites the whole time. I'm a part time singer and I sang my way up to delivery. Gotta keep breathing if you want to sing.

How beautiful!  During transition I would hum as I exhaled.  My MIL always says I 'sang my way through labor'.

OP: I watched a "Baby Story" episode once where this happened.  She was in excruciating pain, how awful for you!  I'm sorry you had that experience.   Glad to hear you are all doing OK now though.

  • I had an epi and I would do it again in a heartbeat, although I would like a better outcome. No headache, but I think I needed my epi re done when i started feeling everything again and just one leg was numb. Oh it was gross to touch my right leg because since I couldnt feel it, it felt dead to me (I know oxymoron right, couldn't feel it but it felt dead lol). So, since it stopped working completely once I got to 6cm dilated, the pain was so unbearable that I couldn't even think right to ask for it to be re done. Lastly, for some reason, when they were poking me with the epi needle, it almost relaxed me (i know that sounds crazy) so I'm wondering if acupuncture is something that I would enjoy....
