So I made the incredible mistake of stretching my legs in bed before I woke up this morning....and ended up with the most excruciatingly painful muscle spasms in BOTH legs for a good 2 minutes. I was screaming so much that my dogs thought there was an intruder in my bedroom. Two hours later, and I still cannot walk like a normal (albeit pregnant) person, or flex either foot. I had no idea they could get this bad in pregnancy!!
Now all I want to do is go back to bed, cry, and have someone bring me a pastry and some coffee. Boooooooo!
Re: Holy effing charlie horses #$#*&*&*!!
That sounds horrible! I haven't had a charlie horse in years (since I stopped playing soccer) and I do not miss them.
I always found that eating bananas helped prevent them. Maybe I don't get them anymore because I am pretty much a monkey
I was getting them all the time.
NO MILK or anything with a lot of calcium before bed... drink WATER or have something with protein. That'll make them stop or just not happen as often.
Oh man. Every time I wake up to pee, I stretch my legs and get a charlie horse.
I found that if I point my toes in the opposite direction it still stretched my calves a little and I do not get a charlie horse.
Good luck!
I think it depends on the person on milk... for me, not getting enough milk gives me charlie horses. I loved the comment by PP that she eats so many bananas that she's a monkey... on the same note, I drink so much milk I might as well be a calf
mooo.

This does help. I read something on here (man has the bump been informative for me) that recommended pointed your toes towards your head when you feel it starting, which stretches your calves...and it does actually work. It's hard to remember that though when they happen b/c they are so dang painful and the pain doesn't necessarily just go away...you'll still feel the burn from the spasm. After stretching my calves out though, walking on a cold surface (such as the basement floor) helps with the "memory" of it.
Yep. They are caused by a calcium and/or magnesium deficiency. My OB/GYN first suggested I try taking Tums regularly for the extra calcium. This has helped tremendously! If that doesn't help, it would suggest a magnesium deficiency so you would need a magnesium supplement. Hope that helps.
Personally, this is the worst part of pregnancy for me-last time and this time. Yuck!

Man! I ate TWO banana muffins before bed with a full glass of milk! I have at least 3-4 servings of dairy daily, and try to eat bananas every day, or other day. This stinks! I do not even know what foods have magnesium...
And it's been 8hrs and my legs are still killing me. January 15th cannot get here fast enough!!!!
