Toddler bed help.

My older son climbed out of the crib this morning.  I converted it to a toddler bed.  How do I get him to nap?  He just gets right out of bed.  I tried for a half hour.  Now his brother is awake and I can't stay up there making sure he stays in his room.  Help!

Re: Toddler bed help.

  • Personally, I would put it back to a crib and put a crib tent on it.

But this is from someone who waited until my older one was 3 before I moved him to a toddler bed. And it went great! He never, ever gets out of it. I wanted to wait until he was old enough to really understand when we told him not to get out (though we may have just been really lucky). DS2 is 2 years 3 months, and I have no plans to move him soon.

If you want to stick with the toddler bed, I think you need to resign yourself to just keep putting him back every time he gets up, and eventually he will probably fall asleep.

    Good luck!

  • We are getting ready to convert DD1's crib to the toddler bed.  My plan to keep her in her room is to put a baby gate in her doorway.  I don't know if that's an option for you, since your LO seems to be a climber.  Could you get a door handle cover?

  • I just tried putting a cover on the door knob.  We'll see what happens.  I have a pressure gate but I can't figure out how to adjust it for his door.  DH has conferences until late tonight and tomorrow night so this couldn't have come at a worse time.  I've been dreading it.

I agree with all of this - my DS is still in his crib.  He has climbed out 2 times and all I did was flip his crib around so that the higher side is out, and the lower side is against the wall.  He climbed out once after that, but hasn't done it again.  I was going to get a tent if he kept doing it.

We are thinking of moving him to a twin bed in the next month or two, but he is older and I think he would understand a bit more when we told him to stay in his bed (better than he would have over 6 months ago, anyway).

    Good luck!
