Upstate NY Babies

The boy wants to wear underwear, I am not ready!

R started wearing underwear Tuesday night. He wet 4 pr yesterday but still insisted on wearing them. He did have many successful potty trips too. When we were out of the training kind I told him he had to wear a diaper, maybe not the right way but it was close to bed time anyways.

He is wearing undies again today. Not sure if he will tire of them or not, but I guess I will go with it. He knows he doesn't like being wet, he is aware of when he is going. This is a step, right? He hasn't pooped in them yet, always on the potty for that.

I did have an Easy Up and he wet that too....he said it was a diaper, not underpants! I guess this is why these won't work. I didn't want to use them anyway! I do have to say the Gerber training pants work great, need more than 3 pair though. I also think I may start a sticker chart for reward instead of m&m's, not sure though.

I was really not ready for this! Maybe a phase, maybe the real deal....we shall see!

  • My DD was PTd at 2.5 years.  You're lucky your DS is motivated!  Most kids need a big push, lots of consistency and even 'bribes' (like prizes).  If he wants to do it, consider yourself lucky!

  • Go with it! Go with it!

The 1st week he wore undies he was on the potty like 10-12x a day to pee and I'm not kidding. I think it's a novelty.

  • You like the gerber ones? I dont find they avoid a mess any better than real undies.

I do think you should go with it for now. you dont have to push it.. but if he gets used to it.. great!

  • Go with it! As much as it's a pain right now, once you get through this stage, it's really not that bad.

Anytime he has peed in them it has soaked in and not run down his legs. Yes his pants get wet, but he has been running around without pants and we haven't had any huge puddles yet! haha I haven't tried his regular undies yet.

It started the other night when I was changing him. He was bothered by the side of the diaper and I said something about how underpants would be more comfortable. He wanted the underwear and continues to prefer them!

We have only had 1 accident so far today, although he has yet to ask to go on his own.

  • Definitely go with it.  I wouldn't go back to diapers.  Pierce has been having a lot of successful trips to the potty the past 2 days (3 poops and about 20 pees), but doesn't hold his pee yet.  I honestly think they need to just have underpants on and realize the feeling of wetness and that's it.  Reed had accidents for about 2 days when I made the cold turkey switch to underwear (he was 21 mos) so definitely on the young side, but we never looked back.
  • What do I do when we go out? Would plastic pants (the kind you used to put over cloth) over underwear be a good idea or no?

Ack, like I said I am not ready....haven't even read over the 3 day potty training thing!

  • Here's my advice, and others may disagree.. but don't over-think it..

I don't know if I told you ladies the story of how we finally "decided" (or were forced to) potty train Eve. DH and I were both at work late one night and MIL had to put Eve to bed. She decided that it was a good idea to tell Eve that she was saying "bye bye" to diapers and would only wear underpants from now on.. Hmm Without asking DH or I, of course. At first, I was livid. Like you, I didn't really want to push it. I had read the 3 day PTing..  but decided it was not for us..  but I decided to go with it as much as possible..But I didn't really have a plan or system either.. The first day or two, i did put a pull up on her when we went out (but she would ALWAYS pee in a pullup), but after that i just let her wear undies and hoped for the best.. we did have quite a few accidents for a few days. I think it was about a week or a little longer before she had an accident free day.  We didn't have rewards for each time she went, but she knew (for months) that when she had a whole day of no accidents she would get to eat a chocolate bunny that we had leftover from easter, and once she was "potty trained" she was promised toys by me and both grandmas.  I would say it was about 3 weeks before she was considered "trained". She still has some accidents, and its literally within the last week. (she was trained in September) that she tells us she has to go.

  • I just have a gallon size ziploc bag in the diaper bag with a 2 pairs of undies and pants.  I have only needed to use one pair once so far, but you know - just in case.  I just have her go pee before we leave to go anywhere, and then I will offer again if it has been 1.5-2 hrs.

I do keep a small potty in my car - and it has come in wonderfully handy both for her to step on (when closed) to climb on to the car seat and to go when we are out with no convenient potty.  Like at the garden factory halloween thing, they had porta pottys.  Or when we spent the day down in Letchworth.  DH hates the idea of a potty in the car, so he doesn't do it - but he only leaves to go to the gym with her.

I used to carry a small potty ring in the diaper bag, but now I just put her on sideways.
