I am so excited to start cloth diapering! I've been reading A TON of info (I never knew there was so much to learn!) I'm hoping to start shortly after the baby is born. I registered for a lot of cloth diaper stuff....everything I will need from newborn on pretty much. Amazon registry was really great for that, especially the universal registry feature.
Just wondering how many on this board are planning on cloth diapering. Do you think you will start right away?
Re: Anyone planning on Cloth Diapering?
My sister planned to cloth diaper her first son, and didn't really stick with it. She gave me all of the CDs she has (which is a lot) because I want to try it, but I don't want to spend the money up front to try it. It could potentially save us a lot of money, but I'm being realistic about the convenience of it for us. I figure even if we just did it on the weekends (since lots of day cares won't CD) it will save us some money (and probably be more manageable).
I love your ambition and excitement!!

We plan to cloth diaper part time (day care won't mess with it). I figure that we will try to start cloth diapering once Dexter's cord falls off completely. Besides, I hear too often that newborns + cloth diapers = leaks (because they're still so small.
I don't have any choice other than to wait a few weeks anyway though, because we only have 7 cloth diapers!!! I keep trying to get my mom and DH's mom to get us some because they both keep saying that they want to get some more things for Dexter. It kinda peevs me just a tad that they won't help out, but will buy other things like Christmas stockings from Pottery Barn and cute clothes. I shouldn't complain though, any gesture they make is still a sweet one. We'll buy some for Dexter for Christmas if he is still without.

I plan on it.
I think I'll be a little relaxed in the beginning... I don't want to stock on NB ones if they will only be used for a month or maybe not at all (i realize they could be used for a while)... last pregnancy I bought some NB squares (old school style) during a cyber monday sale, so I'll prob use those and then later use them as inserts or for doubling at for nights.... As the baby gets bigger and fits without issue into AIO or OS I'll probably go strictly to those, unless family is sitting for us, then I'll allow them to use disposables if they can't get onboard (I can't imagine after showing how easy it is for them to say no, but I wont fight it)...
Speaking of registeries, my favorite site is Baby Earth. I love the set up of the of the site, similar to a BRU, but I love their selection of products. They have a great selection of CDs.

Me! We already have a stash of about 20 AIOs. We probably won't start right away because the diapers we have probably won't fit a newborn and since this might be our only child, we didn't want to buy a separate set for a newborn. I have to say our #1 reason for choosing to CD is definitely to save money. We spent about $200 on diapers and received about $100 worth from my mom. I'm sure we could have chosen a cheaper route if we didn't get AIOs, but the idea of not having a "diapers" category on our monthly budget is a huge draw. The benefits for LO and the environment are great, too!
Amazon is good for adding them to your registry, but if you end up buying some yourself, make sure you check out the CD board for sales from other places. I got some awesome deals that way.

Honestly, I had no idea where to start either. I just stared on the CD board here and read the FAQs at the very top. I think Babycenter.com actually has a much more active CD board, so I will go on there and ask a lot of questions. They also have a really good "Info" section at the top of that board. Both of those sites will lead you to other websites with a ton of info! It is seriously neverending....I am completely obsessed!
I am LOVING the Universal feature to the Amazon registry. YES, you can add anything for any other website and it will show up on your Amazon registry (at the bottom in a separate section). If you go to the FAQs on Amazon, it will show you how to put the "Add to Registry" button at the top of your internet browser. Then when you are on another website and see something you want on your registry, you just click the button!

It can be really overwhelming because of all the different products and terminology. Here is a good site for answering basic questions: https://www.diaperpin.com/howto.asp and a good blog:https://clothdiapers.blogspot.com/
I don't expect to receive any CD supplies at my small, late shower either, so I have been trying to figure out what I need vs. what I don't. Some cloth diapers are expensive, but if you are willing to try out pre-folds and covers, you can cut some of the costs. Basically you pay for convenience with the AIO diapers, but they are absolutely not necessary. Don't feel bad if you don't have enough stocked up to exclusively CD for awhile or even at all. You can still CD part-time until you build up a bigger stash.
Good luck, and feel free to PM me if you need any help! I'm no pro, but sometimes the pros can make you feel even more overwhelmed!

I cloth diaper my DS and will definitely do it for baby #2, too. I have lots of posts about it on my blog and hope you love it as much as I do!
ETA: I definitely recommend waiting until baby's cord falls off---it took 4 weeks for DS to lose his and I was glad we waited to start CD'ing until then. It's pretty hectic those first few weeks anyway, and you don't want CD'ing to be 'one more thing' that stresses you out.

I am. I've been CDing DS2 for a little over a year. I tried a few other types but I love prefolds with thirsties duo cover and a snappi during the day and a disposable at night. If we have a babysitter they either use an Imse Vimse all in one or a disposable. I tried cloth wipes for a little while and I don't love them so I just use huggies wipes unless I run out.
I'll be doing the same thing for this LO but I don't want to buy too many covers until after LO is here so I can either get boy or girl ones. I asked about this kind of diapering with a newborn and most people seemed to say that they would fit a newborn. I'll have a pack of newborn diapers on hand in case these are still a little big but if they aren't we will CD as soon as we leave the hospital.
We are attempting it. DD is almost 4 weeks old and we've probably tried it about 6 or so times
And honestly - DH is pushing it more than I. However, I need to get on it because we bought a whole stash and need to get our moneys worth!
Our plan was to start when her cord fell off. But she still seemed to small - and we didn't get any NB sizes. Now that she's putting on more weight, we're trying the prefolds/covers. I think I have to YouTube videos on this because it is not as easy as I thought! I'll be happy when she's big enough to fit into our AIO sizes.
Jillians Drawers has a $10 trial. You pay a little over $100 for diapers and they send you one of each the the most popular kinds. You can keep the diapers and they keep your money, you can return all of them and get everything but $10 back if it isn't for you, or if you only like some of them you can keep those but return the rest and get part of your money back. This is a great way to try everything if you feel overwhelmed and have no idea what kind you would like.
My DH was also very against it. I guess I just kept talking about it, and won out, haha! I just hope there are no "I told you so" instances with them!
I'm actually going to take a class next week at a local store in my area. Very excited for that!

My DH was too. I told him that I was a SAHM and would be doing most of the diapers. If he didn't like them he didn't have to use them and could use disposables. I told him I'll never ask with help washing them and I wouldn't spend more a week on making a stash then we were already spending on disposables. From his end there wouldn't be a difference. He doesn't like prefolds and wont use them but he is fine with the all in ones. He also loves how much money we are saving. For this baby it will cost us around $200 from birth to potty training.
I don't know if you plan to be a WM or SAHM and how you plan to share parenting duties but maybe you could offer something like this to DH and see what he says.
I registered for the same type of stash as you! And mine was around $1K as well. I have a ton of people coming to my showers, so I needed a lot to register for anyways. Hopefully people actually buy them of the registry! Good luck with everything....I will be very interested in hearing how it goes for you!

We are exclusively CDing and if Quinn goes to daycare in January (still up in the air, DH may be home full time) they will use cloth too. We are lucky to have a full newborn stash with fitteds, AIO's, and prefolds. So far I love it and DH is totally on board. We used disposables in the hospital because of meconium but switched to cloth when we got home. It's a little tricky with her cord but a lot of our fitteds and AIO's have an umbilical scoop. I've done hours and hours of research and am happy to answer any questions.
Also, consider buying used- hyena cart, the CD board, and diapereswappers are great resources to get CD's at a fraction of the cost.
If you're interested, I was looking at this lady's stash, which is a good deal but I'm kind of anal about having everything match (plus am planning to separate the twins, if they're the same gender and look alike, by diaper color), and I think she's a lot closer to you anyhow. This is a really good deal, and would be enough to get you through the first couple months with the newborn size, and give you an idea of what you like/don't like about these covers. Newborn poop is pretty non-toxic, so this would be a really good starter cover. I really liked them for my youngest:
https://seattle.craigslist.org/oly/bab/2687322222.html
I emailed her for specifics, and she said: I counted 63 prefolds, 12 diaper covers, 3 rolls of diaper liners, the wet bag, and a huge stack of diaper inserts (I didn't count those but I can. There are 12 covers and the sizes are: 6 Newborn, 2 small, 4 mediums!
This would be a REALLY cheap way to start, I've bought and sold used diapers, no problem.
I don't have children yet, but from my understand it's completely water soluable especially before they are eating solids, once they are on solids you can rinse/dump in the toilet, use the hose attachment to spray them before putting them in. You also can rinse them when just BFing before washing to keep the water "cleaner"... it's not like an adult is taking a dump in the washing machine and letting it wash around with everything, though I understand why I guy might imagine that..... men.
sorry if that got graphic

Oh yes! DH is more in love with the idea than I ever thought. We have watched all kinds of youtube videos and I have showed him all my research online.
DH and I have already developed a system. Since I am going back to work and he will be PCP for LO, he will do the machine washes and I will do the stripping.
We plan on using disposables till the stump falls off too. I also have sewed my own NB sizes pocket with some scrap blanket I had.
I really think we will stick with it. GL to everyone.
Remind him that all sorts of bodily fluids are currently sharing his laundry and that baby's bodily fluids are going to be in there no matter what. And then teach him how to do a decontamination with bleach.
