Natural Birth

New to the thought of natural...

I never considered natural before or the thought of a birthing center. I noticed what can get confusing is that hospitals like to call their facilities birthing centers as well but from what I've glanced over, they are very different places. Has anyone attempted to give birth in a birthing center then freak out and say "Nevermind, take me to the hospital!"? I have started considering that since my sons PPHN was secondary to pneumonia that the pneumonia may have came from the hospital. I'm guessing since sick people don't go to alternative birthing centers, we can practically eliminate that risk right? Finally, I have only found a few places in Michigan that offer birthing centers. I'm in the Metro Detroit area, can someone speak up if they know some under an hour from the metro area?

  • I don't live near you, but you might try this:

  • We were lucky enough to find the best of both worlds and will give birth with a mid-wife but in a hospital. While that doesn't solve your question about contamination, it would help in the midst of labor when you think "Get me to the hospital!" :-) I am excited about the prospect of birthing on my terms - a natural experience with a midwife - but with the security of knowing that I am in a hospital and if anything happens, we are prepared. This is our first baby so my husband especially feels more comfortable in a hospital. We did have a struggle with our insurance regarding covering the cost of a mid-wife and birthing center, which is why we went the nurse midwife/hospital route. Best of luck!

  • Providence Hospital in Southfield has an Alternative Birthing Center, which I think is right there next to or in the hospital.  They do pretty much everything you'd expect from a "natural birthing center," but I think one of the advantages there is that you're already at a hospital if an emergency arises. I'd suggest checking them out. I'm currently trying to decide whether to stick with my OBs and deliver at Royal Oak Beaumont, or switch to a midwife who delivers at Providence's Alternative Center.  Beaumont is one of the hospitals claiming to have a "birthing center," but there it's just where you have babies vs. a place focusing on natural birth.  I was able to find 2 other birthing centers: 1 in the Ann Arbor-ish area and 1 in the Lansing area.

Good luck, and please post on the Detroit board if you find out anything interesting.  I definitely feel in the minority in our area when it comes to wanting a natural birth, and I'd love to have someone to talk to about local stuff.

  • If I do the hospital route the second time, I will choose to birth at the University of Michigan's new womens hospital. My DS's time in the NICU there was nothing short of amazing. My son was born at Oakwood of Dearborn but life flighted to U of M 2 days later. This is why I love U of M, because of everything they have done for our family.

  • I'll second a vote for Beaumont. My SIL had all 3 of her kids there and was happy with the experience.
