Classic toys

I've been thinking of getting DS a rocking horse for Christmas (or birthday, as he is a Christmas Eve baby).  We visited my cousin this weekend, and she had her (now teenage) son's rocking horse displayed in her family room. It made me think that it would be nice to have a classic toy like that to pass down.  As much as I like the toys with all the bells and whistles, the FP activity table just isn't going to make it through the generations.

Of course, part of me wonders if DS will really enjoy a rocking horse...or if I am just caught up in the potential nostalgia!

Re: Classic toys

  • Oh I love that idea!  I might just have to steal it. :D

But seriously, classic toys are classic because they're tried and true.  I can't see how it could go wrong to have a rocking horse, if only for decoration.  I might be caught up in the nostalgia too, but I bet your DS will love it.

I remember a metal(tin?) toy car that my dad and uncle used to play with that I loved getting my hands on as a child at my grandparents'.   Some things do stand the test of time.

  • Agreed with Kiki. And you know what? I may consider buying one as well. Just checked on Amazon and there is quite a selection.

  • Please.  You know what the kids are getting for Christmas?  Stick ponies!  All because DD keeps using her little broom to gallop around the house.  So go for it.

  • I'm all about having stuff to pass down. My mom just brought over my old Tonka truck and some books so I've been thinking about heirlooms a lot lately. I'm not sure how much of DS' stuff will survive to be handed down to his kids, but I hope some of it will.
  • One of DS favorite toys is my old inch worm. The ones now are so small compared to mine. Our ECI worker can't believe the mint condition it's in. What can I say, I was very gentle with my toys. My Mom still has my horse...probably like you are talking about. I was hoping she could have sent that down with a bunch of other things. We also have a cast iron ride on John Deer tractor my Dad had gotten me when I was like 4. I can't wait to do pictures with DS on it.

  • I may just steal your idea too

  • You can never go wrong with the classics.  I am getting the fisher price record player for a friend with a 2YO and the popcorn popper is my standard 1yo gift.
  • If you want to update the classics, there is a rocking horse that is Bullet from Toy Story.  Michael got it last Christmas and he loves it.  He rocks on it and now can scoot it accross the floor.
