Postpartum Depression

Anyone quit breastfeeding b/c of PPD?

I haven't been officially diagnosed w/ PPD, but I have been feeling really down lately. I am breastfeeding.  DD does not latch well at all, so it is a struggle, and almost impossible to feed her in public.  As a result, I am stuck at home all day long (SAHM).  I think if I quit breastfeeding, I would get out of the house more and that would help with the depression.  Anyone else quit BF?

  • I'm in a similar predicament.

I just got diagnosed with PPD. BF is really not working for me (my little guy will not latch for anything, no matter what we do) and we're exclusively pumping currently...and even that's not really working. Plus I just got put on an anti depressant and after talking to the OB, pediatrician, psychiatrist and pharmacist and getting very different opinions of how much will go through into breast milk, I'm just becoming more and more discouraged of doing it.

  • I had PPD with our first daughter and i was breastfeeding too. I went and got help at about 6 weeks along and quit breastfeeding at that time. it was too overwhelming for me to deal with along with everything else. This time around, (just had another daughter two weeks ago)..i decided no breastfeeding right from the start. I knew the likelihood of getting ppd was greater since i had it before. I've done bottle feeding this time and it's worked well.
  • I quit breastfeeding for a number of reasons

    1)  difficulties latching, even after home visits with a LC
    2) painrful reflux led to low weight gain and my supply tanking
    3) I couldn't keep up with EP and the lack of sleep
    4) with PPD the stress and responsibility ramped up to a crazy level.

I reached a point where all of these things hit at once.  We spent a week at my in-laws, I caught up on sleep and we made the decision to FF.  It broke my heart (I had a goal! and I wanted to reach that goal! and now I had failed!), but it really eased a lot of the stress.  And with the husband helping with feedings, I was able to get more sleep.

You are not alone in your feelings.

Seriously your reasons for having to go to FF are exactly what I'm going through right now! I'm just starting the anti depressants today for the first time and after the last few days, I can't keep up the EP or the BF.

  • i had similar probs with bf and battling it after my first and to be honest i did last 6 months of bfing but i did a lot of pumping and did supplement with bf. I can tell you pumping was great, as dh could easily feed him and i got extra sleep on the weekends. Now after #2 i am still dealing with my ppd, but bfing is much much better and its great not to be attached to #2 24/7 a he is not exclusive only the boob but is bf.

    Do what's right for you!!

  • My friend had severe PPD (to the point needed to be hospitalized) and her psych demanded she stop BF.  I also had PPD until I quit BFat 8 mos.  it was amazing how much better I felt, and how my hormones leveled off.  I wish I had quit much sooner than I did.  If you are having a struggle w/DD, it definitely just creates more anxiety and worry in you, which is not healthy for you or her.  I am sure being a SAHM is tough too.  I work, so that definitely helped a ton with me getting better, plus I was forced to pump vs trying to get DD to latch on which was stressful as hell.

  • Yes, I did.

At 8 weeks when I went back to work.

I just couldn't do it anymore.

Don't feel badly.  Just feed your kid!

All of this, especially the part I underlined. You are so not alone.

  • Because I have a history of depression to begin with I planned to formula feed my son (now 2 yrs old) from the start. I knew I just would have too much to contend with having a new baby. Please do not feel guilty about formula feeding.

All the decisions you make for your child are really family decisions. That is, you need to do what is best overall for your family and taking adequate care of "mom" will help you in turn take care of your DD and will be good for the family.

Please talk to your OB or general practitioner too and let one of them know what is going on. If it is depression it is better to treat it sooner rather than later.
