Poor Sophie. She's really having a tough time. Ear infection last month, then strep throat last week, now she's puking her head off. It must be a virus of some sort b/c she's still on antibiotics for the strep. Almost finished. I'm thinking that may have left her more susceptible to whatever this bug is b/c it probably wiped out all the good bacteria in her system. Anyway, we've actually never dealt with vomit so this is a very unwelcome surprise. So what's the deal- how long does it last? Do we need to take her to the Dr? She doesn't have a fever but she is throwing up immediately when she eats/drinks anything. I gave her a bottle in the car and that's what started it all. She threw up 4 times on the ride home. Gross. Then got her home and bathed and she seemed fine and was happy and playing so DH gave her some banana- thinking that would be BRAT friendly. She threw up after just a couple bites. I did get her to drink some water and she kept that down and she went right to sleep but I bet we're in for a long night. Any tips for dealing w/ this?
Re: Stomach flu?
Geneva got really sick right after her first birthday with a nasty virus (hers included a high fever). She would only suck on ice chips, Pedialyte pops smashed up, and watermelon. And with the watermelon, she'd suck on it and hand it back to me. She was pitiful.
Pedi told us if she went for more than 8 hours without a wet diaper, to head for CHOA. The trick is really to keep the fluids in her. Per the pedi, we even had to force feed her Pedialyte with a syringe because she refused to drink anything. Focus on the liquids before you worry about solid food.
Of course, call your pedi if things take a turn for the worse tonight.
Poor girl! I think maybe stick to just the clear liquids (Pedialyte makes decent-tasting popsicles if she is interested in those) for a day to make sure she stays hydrated, and if she's not interested in food then don't give her any until she's been keeping fluids down for a bit (we've done this a few times, can you tell?).
I was always advised to give Florastor, a nice probiotic you can sprinkle on things like applesauce or yogurt (when she can eat, that is) along with any antibiotic and when there's a stomach virus. I've found that 100% of the time it helps HC get plugged up (more with diarrhea than vomiting, maybe) faster and feel better sooner.
HTH; hang in there and wash your hands like someone with OCD!!!
