I feel like lately when I put Luca in his carseat (I have the Chicco Keyfit 30) that I am smooshing his shoulders. When are you supposed to adjust the height of the straps?
Also when did you take out the neck support/head support thing?

i took the head support away once LO's head was smooshed with it (about 4 or 5 months old with DD#1). as for the straps, i adjusted them periodically. the should be at or below the shoulders some so if the next hole up still has it at or below the shoulders then go ahead and adjust them.
On the directions for ours (graco snugride 30) it said to take out the infant head support after you moved the straps up from the lowest setting, so that is what we did.
You can take out the infant inserts after 11 pounds, if LO can support his or her neck and head. I did so at 3 months and also moved the shoulder straps up one level

This. And that was a LONG time ago. We haven't had to move up a second time, yet.

I did this. When I had my carseat installation inspected, they were pretty adamant that we take out the infant insert after 11 pounds.

I adjust the carseat when she screams when I put her in. I know it's too tight then/pushing on her shoulders. She doesn't shriek otherwise in the carseat. You can also tell...they just look uncomfortable.
I took the headsupport out last week actually (so almost 4 months). I could've done it sooner bet kept forgetting and it didn't bother her. Then I noticed it was smashing her ears/head so it was time to go.
I've adjusted the carseat twice now and once I do it we're good for months. The first was because the crazy hospital nurse had her in too tight. I couldn't even get it buckled without pinching her so the carseat tech fixed it. The second time was last week.
I adjusted the straps when they were starting to look too tight and be difficult to get her arms under...about a month ago I think. The head support thing got lost in the airport when Clara was about 2.5 months old so since then she has been without one, but she has great neck control so I didn't feel the need to buy a new one.

All of this.
