Exercise- to do or not to do?

So many different opinions on exercise. Had my first appt. last week, Doc said all is well and I can exercise as I normally do, just to watch my HR getting too high. So my question is how many people do cardio and weights while pregnant? Or should I stick to yoga, swimming, walking?? I routinely exercise, but some I worry that I may m/c if I work out too hard and I certainly want to avoid that if possible!

  • Cardio and weights are fine. Just be cognizant of your heart rate, as your doctor suggested. And don't overdo it on the weights (because lifting too much can pose a risk).

I plan to run, for as long as possible. But I've already been running. As long as you aren't starting anything new, and are talking with your doctor about your activity to be sure it's still okay with her, then you should be fine.

  • Work out as you normally would before you got pregnant. Just listen to your body and slow down if you get dizzy, or shorter of breath sooner. And drink more fluids. Your body will let you know. Otherwise staying active as much as you can and as long as you can during pregnancy is better for you and baby. And labour. The more fit you are, the easier labour could be.

  • If you're already in shape and your doctor has given you the go ahead, everything I've read and heard is that you can continue what you've been doing until your body makes it clear you have to slow down.  If you are starting to work out now I think you are supposed to stick with the less impact exercising like yoga, swimming, and walking.  But as a second time mom that had ALOT of weight to lose after my first pregnancy I would say absolutely do your best to keep up a good work out!  I walked and ran last night for an hour and I feel fine.  Do what you can and trust what your body is telling you.

  • Exercise is SO important! Good for you and the baby, and really helps you bounce back. I exercised my entire pregnancy with DS, right up until the end. I only gained 24 lbs and was 2 lbs. from my pre-pregnancy weight in 6 weeks. I ran up until about 20 weeks and continued to walk A LOT and do Jillian Michaels and LIGHT weights. Keeping healthy and strong will really help you feel good during and after-just don't push TOO hard! GL:)
  • I did triathlons before I got KU and was pretty much always training for them.

Unfortunately, due to issues, I can't work out anymore, but I was doing the same workouts I was pre-pregnancy. Working out had NOTHING to do with my issues either ;)

Cardio and weight is fine. Maybe tone it back a bit if you are crazy like I was :)

  • It's okay to continue your normal routine.  Just tone down the intensity if necessary.  The heart rate rule is outdated and most doctors now recommend going by perceived exertion instead.  If you can speak in full sentences while exercising, you're fine.

This is what I do.  I run, and if I'm feeling too out of breath, just take a walk break.

  • You're fine.  Just be sure you can still talk when you're working out and you should be good.  If you're so winded you wouldn't be able to carry on a conversation you're working too hard.

Just hydrate, stay cool and don't push yourself too hard.  Working out is safe and beneficial during pregnancy (unless your doctor tells you otherwise.)

  • I was able to do body step until almost 8 months last time.  I could have probably kept going but I kept thinking how ridiculous I must look to other people.  I only gained 20 pounds and was back in my old jeans the next week.  Just as everyone said, listen to your body.  Slow down when you get out of breath, and drink LOTS of water.  So keep it up, your body with thank you!

  • Whatever you are doing, make sure you can carry on a conversation the entire time.  This means you are getting enough oxygen, and therefore baby is getting enough as well.

  • I'm planning on running and walking through out my pregnancy, I'm an avid runner so i think I would not have problem with it. Pre TTC I asked my doctor if its ok to run couple miles if I know I'm pregnant and she said yes. Just make sure I keep an eye on my heart beat and drink plenty of water. I cant wait to run again, I havent been out and running for the last 4 weeks since its been too cold outside and I've been feeling fatigue, but today I have the motivation to go.
