C-sections

Anyone had more than 2 c/s?

We are starting to talk about #3 which will mean my 3rd c/s.  I have an appt in Dec to talk to my OB and make sure another c/s is an option for me since we didn't discuss it after I had DC#2.  Both c/s went smoothly with no complications, but the 2nd one took a lot longer because of the scar tissue.  Is this normal for the 2nd one or is it an indication I might not be a good candidate for another surgery?  Any info on multiple c/s is welcome.

Re: Anyone had more than 2 c/s?

  • I've had 3. One failed induction, Two under GA, and Three- spinal.

They definitely took much longer stitching me up the 3rd time. I was told I had some scar tissue 3rd time and to not have another child.  Unfortunately I contracted a MRSA infection, post 3rd c/s and had a 10 day stay at hospital followed by a surgery to remove infection b/c antibiotics didn't work.

In general, I think most obs recommend not having more than 2 c/s and definitely not more than 3. This has been a very very difficult recovery for me.

  • VBA2C might be an option for you, also, if you're interested. ACOG came out last year in support of VBAC as a possibility for some women who've had two previous c-sections.

FWIW, my sister had three c-sections, and only had complications with her first one. hth and good luck!

  • I had my third in April.    Even though there was some scar tissue my Dr said he didn't see a problem with me having another.  I asked him how many he thought I could have and he said that it is always hard to say but he would probably tell me to stop after 5.
  • I'm having my 3rd c-section on the 22nd. My OB never advised against is and we'll be done after this one anyway.

  • I just had my third c-section on 10.26.11 and my OB said it looks great in there and I could have a couple more if we wanted.  This, of course, was being said right before he started my tubal ligation so maybe he was just making sure I wanted the tubal (which I did!).  This recovery, #3, has been a little more achy but I wonder if that too is because of the tubal... I've never been told a number of how many to have but I was advised to try to have the kids more than a year apart to allow my incision to heal... that wasn't a problem for us though because our first two were almost 2 years apart and then we waited 4 years before I got PG with our newest addition.

This isn't true, it just all depends on the woman, amount of scarring, types of incisions, etc. Every case is different. My OB said they do a 4th c-section a couple times a year and that if we do have the 4 children that we want it should be fine given my own recovery. Hoping to VBAC this time, but if not I won't VBA2C next time.

  • After my last csec, I asked the doctor about having more. He said I was young and he didnt see why I couldnt even though the nurse told me they didnt recommend more than 2 csecs. I am going to have my 3rd child in July and am going to discuss the option of having a vbac. Not sure if I will be able to since my last csec was only 15 months ago.
