Post-partum supplies?

I know this has been asked a million times, but I can't find a recent post about it. I plan on buying some supplies today after my dr appointment and so far I know I need to get pads/depends, dermoplast, stool softeners, nipple cream, and breast pads. Anything I'm forgetting that you would recommend? TIA!!

Re: Post-partum supplies?

  • Tucks pads

Make sure to grab various types of pads for different flows as you probably won't want to have to send DH out for those (because he will probably buy the wrong kind).  So have overnights, regulars, and pantyliners.

Also make sure to have Tylenol and Advil on hand in case you tear or have a C-section.

You don't need Depends if you are delivering in a hospital.  If you are not delivering in a hospital then they are a good idea to have.

Make sure to have lots of easy one handed snacks.  And have some prunes or dried fruit around to help get things moving and it's an easy snack too.  :)

  • I got some bigger undies for the bulky pads, more Tucks pads (I ran out of the hospital supply) more cortizone cream (ditto ran out)...also it sounds like you are nursing, have lots of snacks and drinks ready :)

  • Snacks - granola bars, cheese sticks, anything you can eat with one hand.

  • If your BF, lanolin. It helped because my little guy tore up my nipples. Tucks pads (this has been a Godsend) and a variety of maxi pads. I had heavy bleeding the first day at the hospital. By the second or third day, I was still bleeding, but it was very light. It's now 11 days pp and I still have light spotting. (I only need a liner). I was stuck with the enormous pads I bought for about two days until my MIL went to the store for me and bought me a variety.

Weird things that I picked up and was glad I did:

Cake or coffee if people are going to come over and see you after. It's always nice to have something to offer guests. (I had an onslaught of visitors this weekend and I was glad I had something to offer them. It's just part of my upbringing).

If you have a pet, a new toy. Stupid, I know but my dog was thrilled that when I came home I had a new toy for her. She's been so wrapped up in her "pinky poodle" that she's not even noticed the baby. (Other than if he cries).

  • Interesting what you think you need and what you find you really need! Off your list, the only thing I used was the nipple cream and the breast pads. Hospital supplied the pads, I don't know what dermoplast is, and I didn't need stool softeners. I wouldn't stock up too much on this stuff, might be a waste of money. I just made DH go out and buy me things as I needed them (plus, Walgreens is two blocks from our house!)

This may be a dumb question, but what do you need cortisone cream for?

  • I bought almost everything that was suggested on lucieslist.com under post partum. I did buy Depends....one major reason being that I didn't want to ruin a bunch of underwear or leak onto the bed or my nice, bright white glider...so I'd rather be safe than sorry and she suggested them to be more comfortable than pads or the hospital mesh panties.

I also got a lanolin free nipple cream (earth mama baby angel) b/c she said the lanolin ones tend to burn (although they're supposedly good for 'greasing' the breast pump flanges). I did buy stool softeners....this is one item that I think is a 'better safe than sorry' thing to take.

I bought a donut for the car ride home and the house, nipple 'soothies' and gel packs and tucks pads. She also suggests a sitz bath and dermoplast but I'm waiting to see if I need the sitz and/or if my hospital provides the dermoplast. I kept my receipt for all these things to return what I may not use. I don't want to have my hubby running out constantly for things, so I feel pretty prepared. GL!

  • I'm waiting until I know what I need since everyone experience is different. Both of my friends that most recently had babies said they didn't need anything special other than breast pads. (Assuming that you already have pads for periods of course.) CVS is literally 1 min from our house so I'd rather just run out for things than have a bunch of stuff I don't need.

  • What I've used/needed---pads (took a bunch from the hospital, but have a stash of thinner ones at home); breast pads; lanolin (don't use often); hot/cold compresses for breasts (found w/ breastfeeding supplies); Dermoplast (didn't use w/ first baby; did use this time and it was offered to me free from the hospital); I took a bunch of the mesh undies from the hospital so I didn't risk ruining my own; snacks and bottles of water and easy lunches; Tylenol (I didn't need for pain down there--didn't tear--but some of my cramps and a headache were horrific; heard the cramps are worse with subsequent pregnancies and they weren't bad w/my first baby); Tuck's pads; peri bottle that I took from the hospital. I managed without a stool softner.

  • I can't live without:

    - Giant pads with dermaplast sprayed on them (and myself)

    - Nipple cream and disposable/reusable breast pads

    - Mesh underwear...ask the nurse for some before you leave hospital

    - Soft nursing bras from Target (comfy and cheap)

    - Slippers

    - Bring your own towel to the hospital...I felt more like I was home and it was so much better to shower with something so familiar

    - Stool softeners and Miralax...it took me almost a week to poop after the baby was born and I was TERRIFIED to go.  I took Miralax for two days in a row and it made going a lot easier with NO pain.

Gotta go feed a baby!  Good luck!

Not dumb!  Helps with itching from hemroids!

  • Get the Always Infinity pads. Trust me they are worth every penny. Also buy some hemorrhoid cream if you don't already have it.

  • Someting that has really helped me is having those Always wipes (baby wipes for adults). You can find them by the pads and tampons. Toilet paper was too rough for me to handle so my mom picked these up for me and they are heaven!!

  • The only things I bought were pads - for bras and underwear. My hospital sent me home with plenty of pads, mesh underwear, ice packs, a peri bottle, Tucks, and prescriptions for Motrin, Norco, and a stool softener.
