Baby head injury

On Sunday Luci rolled off a bench about a foot from the ground and landed head (side) first onto a brick walkway while we were in Savannah this weekend. She cried right away and calmed down while I held her and we put ice and an EMT who heard me scream and was there looked her over. Luckily, somehow, she doesn't have a bruise, bump or spot on her. I watched her and she slept at her normal nap time on the car ride home, ate fine, hasn't thrown up, has been eating fine, is acting normally and I woke her every two hours last night and will tonight. Her doctor's office isn't worried and said I didn't need to bring her in unless I notice a change in the next week.

Has anyone had a baby fall and had a delayed reaction? Anyone had an injury and there were no signs when it happened? Has anyone been sent to the ER for a CT scan or another test? I asked the doctors office if she needed one and they said only if she shows signs.I really do think and have faith that she will be fine but am still a nervous wreck. Please also keep her in your prayers this week.

Re: Baby head injury

  • I think Heather did....didn't Riley roll off the bed?  She's on vaca but try and message her.

Look for fluid in the ear after a head injury.  If there is fluid, go to the hospital ASAP.

Babies are pretty incredible but it would probably calm your nerves more to take her into the hospital or at least call your Pedi.

  • Oh no!  I'm SO sorry!  I know how scary that is!  yes, Riley fell about 3 feet off our bed onto our hardwood floor when he was 4 months old.  He wasn't responsive immediately though and we called 911 but by the time they got there he was responsive and fine and they did some tests like made him follow their finger and stuff and they said they thought he was fine and it was up to us if we wanted them to take him to the ER.  at the time we agreed with them, but five miunutes after they left I just kept thinking what if so I took him to the er, they did a CT scan and he had a skull fracture and some bleeding and we spent the night in the ICU for monitoring.  he had absolutely no symptoms though throughout the whole thing.  he was fine to nurse, he was laughing and playing, he was fine!  So chances are good that if you've made it this far that she is OK!  good luck, big hugs!

  • I'm so sorry she fell. Owen fell off the bed when he was about 6 months old. He fell about a foot or foot and a half onto our hardwood floors. He cried for a few minutes but calmed down after that. He didn't have a bump or bruise or anything and acted normally, so we didn't take him to the ER. He was fine. We were more traumatized than he was and I still feel guilty about it since I was the one that was right next to him.

If she is still ok now, I think she is probably fine. Don't beat yourself up about it.

  • Wow Heather, that is scary! She didn't black out and it's been three days so I think she is going to be okay. I talked to her pedi and they said they just recommend observation and only send kids to get a scan or x-ray if they blacked out, have obviously injuries and/or are showing some symptoms. Hopefully she is fine and in a week or two I will stop worrying although I will NEVER for get that moment....
