Allergies

I'm starting to think that DS may have allergies. He often has a runny nose and I would just chalk it up to him teething or a cold starting up. But my pedi mentioned that it might be that but we didn't really go into it. Today, we were out enjoying the great weather and he had a runny nose and was sneezing the rest of the day :( How do allergies work with toddlers?

I will probably scheduling an appointment soon, but I wanted to hear from others... do they give them meds for this? Are fall allergies common? The weird thing is that for the past 2 weeks, I have also been experiencing sore throat and some coughing in the evenings. I haven't had allergies before, but it seems like that's what it is. I wonder if we developed the allergies simultaneously or it's just a coincidence? TIA.

Re: Allergies

  • I think DS also has allergies.  In the spring and fall time right around when I had to start taking my allergy meds he was really congested.  It was prime pollen/mold season as well.  Pedi said a half dose of childrens Zyrtec would help but I haven't given him any yet.  We just did lots of saline spray and suction.

  • My DS has been taking Zyrtec since late spring. It really keeps his runny nose and sneezing away for the most part. The pediatrician told me we would probably be able to stop in the fall, but so far his symptoms return every time we stop so i just keep giving it for now. I am at the point i need my claritin year round, so i am not surprised he needs something too.
  • Thanks ladies, I'm going to speak to his pedi about it and just keep an eye on him in general to see if there's a pattern.
