2 babies one sac....anyone have experience?

So, I'm at almost 9 weeks and on the first two u/s they couldnt' see two sacs, just one.  My OBGYN says not to worry because it could still be forming or that it could be too thin for their U/S to detect.  I go back for another U/S on Monday, which will be 2 weeks since my last one.  Has anyone had a similar experience with their twins?  I'm not sure if I should begin to get concerned or if I shouldn't worry about it?!?!?

Thanks, I'm having a hard time getting excited because I just want to get this mystery figured out.  If we're having MOMO twins, then I just want to know, so we can begin to prepare.  If not, same story, ya know?!?!? Don't get me wrong, I couldn't be happier to have twins on board, but I just want to know what we're dealing with.

  • same here. The doctor didnt find the membrane until about 14wks. Dont worry about it until you know for sure. Its very hard to detect that early.

  • Welcome!  I think there may be 1 or 2 mo/mo twin moms on here.  Like OPs said, it's still early to detect the dividing membrane.  We could see ours at 11 weeks.  I delivered in Dallas too!

Thank you guys, for the positive feedback.  It's scary enough to think about having twins becacuse of the elevated risk involved.  I can't wait to scratch this possiblity off of the list!

  • I was just in your shoes for several weeks. Every appt, every 2 weeks, no membrane. FINALLY Tuesday they saw a membrane, made me cry. I was so excited. Granted they are still high risk and now at even higher risk for twin to twin, but the cord entanglement scared me to death! I hope you find a membrane soon. We had to have a full u/s to see it. Otherwise the doc had just been using a little bedside u/s and couldn't see it. Good luck and congrats!

  • Most u/s techs won't even look for a membrane until 12 weeks or later.  I had a trained u/s tech at the perinatologists office for my NT scan and even she had to do a transvaginal to finally find it!
  • Our 7 wk ultrasound the doctors was concerned about one sac.  Then at the 12 wk, the tech said she saw a very thin membrane between the two.  We were very concerned, but the doctor said the sacs are very hard to see until around 12 weeks.  We were very relieved, although we were told that twins could poke holes in very thin membranes.  Good Luck.  I hope they find a membrane at your next u/s.
  • My first ultrasound was at 7 wks and no membrane...one was never found but I was able to deliver 2 healthy boys.  A mono/mono pregnancy is scary but my boys are proof that with monitoring an propr prenatal care it can have a hppy ending.

I REALLY hope a membrane is found and as previous posters stated..it is very early.

  • Thanks guys!!  I'll keep you all posted.  U/S monday!!

  • 2 babies and 2 amino sacs!!  Yay, I was really worried about the possibility of MOMO twins.  Not that it can't be done, but twins are risky enough, so at least we will not have that concern!!  Thanks, for the words of encourgement and support!
