QOTD suggestion: What's your favorite parenting book?
married 03/08/08 -- ttc with PCOS (dx 2005) & DS
IUI #3 gave us the best 2nd anniv. gift ever: 2 babies! (born 03/09/10)
Peanut and Little Man are getting so big! 2 years old already!
finally blogging again at This Will Be: An Adventure
Here's my update--we have a new baby picture! (I tried to post it; don't know if I succeeded. Doubt it). Baby is healthy, measuring ahead 2 days, and even showed us all his or her hands and feet.
Bigger update was why we have this beautiful picture. M's been having constant pressure, which we assumed was round ligament pains common at this time, but the pain became so severe that she called her nurseline asking if she could take something...and they sent her to the ER. So, we spent 4 hours in the ER getting tests, etc...culminating in the ER doc not being able to find the baby's heartbeat on the doppler. It was easily the scariest night of our lives. It was about an hour before we got in to the ultrasound room, where no one had told the tech that's what we were waiting to hear...so she took another 5 minutes of pictures while we held our breath before she actually told us, "oh, baby's heartbeat is 152." It was horrible...but thank God, everything is perfect.
Turns out, M is one of the "lucky" ones who gets severe growing pains...so she's on some meds to alleviate the pain and back to work now. And that's been my week. Ready for less excitement next week, for sure.
QOTD: I don't own any parenting books, yet! We did really like "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" when TTCing, so perhaps that can count.
PC&AP: I'm still waiting to hear back from the bank about our Cash for Keys offer, it would be nice to know if we will be moving, bigger house + wider age range = more chances for adoption. Yes, I added the C in there this week, J and I talked about IVF (me carrying her bio child) yesterday, there are no definite plans but I would love to be pregnant again.
TTC&A: Not much going on, waiting for our agency to call with a placement. J even said yesterday "Are they going to give us another baby???". We finalize Izzie's adoption next Friday!
ATP: If you read my blog, you know what's going on... I'm trying therapeutic parenting (it's tough). Izzie's food issues have crept back to the surface. A has been testing me and having attitude again. We are all struggling but I wouldn't trade it for the world.
QOTD: I don't own a single parenting book but I have a book called Real Love by Greg Baer and it has a lot of ideas in it that line up with therapeutic parenting. I should reread it.
Things are status quo. I am hoping Carter's outburst at school yesterday was an isolated event. Gray has been very kind and polite. Whoo hoo. Right now they are studying the Target toy catalog like it is their job. They have pointed out at least a dozen things they want in addition to everything they see on tv. And last night we had a discussion about how Santa comes into our house since we don't have a chimney (yes, I do have a twinge of guilt with the lying portion of this all, but they are so darn into and excited!)
QOTD: we read very little on parenting. We did like Parenting with Love and Logic and have tried to use that technique - especially in the toddler/preschool years. I want to read How to Talk so Your Child with Listen, but when all is said and done at the end of the day, I am toast.
I can't think of any books that we didn't like since we tend to know the gist of the philosophy before we read it/buy it. And we don't read books that fly in the face of our basic parenting philosophies. Same with books about sleep. I didn't read Weisbluth since I knew the basic tenents didn't match up with our thoughts about CIO. But Kim West's book did and so we read that (and did that method to sleep through the night.) I also liked the books by Mary Sheedy Kurcinka one about sleeping and the other on raising a spirited child (read this one for Gray as a toddler!)
Update: RB had her 2 year check up yesterday. Doc was impressed with her speech and mildly concerned about her weight (she hasnt gained anything from last check months ago), but overall she's doing great. And she's tall - 95%! no wonder its impossible to find her pants... The doc did see fluid in her ear which makes me more convinced that at her ENT follow up in a couple weeks they will suggest tubes. Daisy is getting so big. She's really engaged in her world and intentional in her movements - shedding more and more of the reactive baby and gaining more mindful child. Its exciting. I think i'm more excited and less sad about her growing up than I was with RB and thats a good thing. But gosh darn it, when will that baby STTN?? Sprout is having a typical week. Last night was his last night of gymnastics and he surprised me by askign not to be signed up again - he seemed to love it and was always excited for tuesdays
QOTD: How to Talk so Kids will Listen, and Listen so Kids will Talk
Update - DS is coming up on 4 months. How did that happen? He is putting a lot of energy into "talking" ...boy can he babble on and on. We love how much he tries out his voice. And oh those smiles.....best part of our day. He is getting close to the tipping point on rolling front to back. Who would have thought that round CD butt would actually help in this case!
QOTD: we don't have a great book....but would like a simple one on development at different ages that does not freak us out.
Update: Punkin is gorgeous. Several good days of sleeping 2 hours, then eating. Past few nights--up a lot. Snacking. We're all learning.
We're getting used to the foster care system--all the people, all the sideways communication, all the "that's just the way it is" attitude. That's hard. We're thankful he's too little to know about any of these communications.
Book: I read Baby Whisperer last night like it was the bible--trying to get him to sleep for 2 hours at night like he does during the day.
Update: C and I fought about sperm donors this week. She made an offhand comment about how the sperm donors on Private Practice were obviously not like the ones you get to choose from in real life. I got upset because I feel like she doesn't know much about unknown donation and just makes assumptions. I think she is vastly overestimating how "easy" known donation is going to be. She agreed to learn more about both options, but I don't think she'll take the initiative to do it without my prodding. I find this frustrating. I know she wants to start a family as much as I do, but our temperaments about it are just so different.
AOTD: I was a nanny for an infant for about a year, and I loved "The Happiest Baby on the Block". The baby was very fussy, and it worked like a charm. (As did babywearing).
Same sex couple TTC with donor sperm. I am 35 and carrying. Endometriosis and DOR. AMH 0.5, AFC 5-8, FSH 7ish
PCP: Still working on physical stuff. I'm working with a new personal trainer (who's also a doula and focuses on breath, mindfulness) beginning tonight.
I'm really busy right now with work, school, my LC course in order to finish everything before 12/20 when I leave for a 10-day meditation retreat and then (hopefully) my internship in D.C. I have a feeling we won't ttc until at least March/April because of the travel and lack of charting before then.
QOTD: I have an entire library of books, but mostly pregnancy/newborn, thanks to my career. My favorite general books in those areas are Pregnancy, Childbirth and the Newborn and Happiest Baby. My least favorites are the What to Expect series.
Met 07/07/05, Wedding 07/07/07, Legal Marriage Ceremony 12/9/12, Baby Boy Born 08/09/13
Update: Just waiting for CD1! My last two cycles have been so dang long.
AOTD: I haven't read any books specifically from the perspective of parenting, but my teaching style was definitely influenced by Love and Logic, Reggio Emilia, and Montessori.
I can't believe my baby is almost 2! he's been talking a lot more lately, and starting to use multiple words together--and not ones that normally go together like all done, things like "mama UP!" when he wants me to stand and "Chai mow!" which, um, means Chai meowed. it's so amazing to see him really starting to talk, especially since he has not been a big talker (or even babbler).
other than that, we've decided to wait until January to start trying again. it's possible we won't be able to start until then anyway depending on when I start cycling again, but it'll be at least December with our forced cycle off after the m/c and I do NOT want to deal with the stress during the holidays. plus we'll have money in my FSA again since we used everything up this year.
