So glad they made this board!
I am STILL considering whether to have a RCS or VBAC at the moment but I was curious if anyone has stairs in their home and how going up/down them was and how soon it was possible. I didn't really deal w/ stairs on my 1st c-section until I was 6 weeks PP & I think it was a little weird but not painful.
And what about lifting your toddler at home? May as well throw that question out there too.
thx!!
Re: Stairs and a c-section
I got conflicting post-op orders regarding stairs. After my first c/s, my OB told me no stairs for a couple of weeks. This time around, my OB (a different one) told me stairs were okay as soon as I went home, just to limit trips up and down to 4-5 a day. I followed the instructions both times, and felt fine. Just not sure why two different docs told me two different things.
As far as lifting goes, I'm listening to the none for 6 weeks recommendation. My 28 month old DS is about 35 lbs. and I'm still at the point where I can tell it would hurt to lift him. Luckily, I've had help and he's been going to daycare so it hasn't really been an issue. Someone at daycare helps me get him into his carseat when I pick him up and DH does all the lifting at home.
i have a large staircase and did the stairs the day i came home from the hospital. i made sure i was only going up and down once a day(to get up and to go to bed).
it hurt, but was doable.
As for stairs, I waited about 1 wk pp to go up and down. I just made a trip or two a day until I felt ok to do it more often than that.
As for a toddler, I am not lifting DDs until my 6 wk clearance. They each weigh about 24-25 lbs. and I don't want the risk of backpedaling my recovery time. I bought 2 Tinker Bell step stools for the girls--I've taught them these past few wks (better to do before your c/s--I had hoped for a VBAC but my little man ended up with a RCS past my due date!) how to climb in & out of their high chairs and the changing table so I don't have to lift or carry them. I just started putting the stools in my van and that way they can get themselves in and out of their seats (granted though, it's not very comfortable but I then have to crawl back and buckle/unbuckle them but at least not having to lift them!!)
GL in whatever you decide. With twin toddlers, I really hoped for a VBAC but it ended up not being in the cards for DS. I wish I would have prepared more for a RCS with my toddlers though b/c it's been frustrating not being able to be 100% for them.

I didn't have any problems with the stairs after my rcs. We taught DS1 at a very early age how to go up /down the steps so I wouldn't have to carry him as much especially since he's a big boy for his age (27lbs at 15 months old).
Around week 2 pp is when I started picking ds1 up and there were a few times I had to carry him up/down the steps. It never hurt my recovery. I bent down and lifted him with my legs. My OB said that he knew with a toddler at home I had no chocie but to pick him up. He did say to try to wait a week to do which is the only time I had dh home. After that I was on my own.
I had no problem doing stairs when I returned home four days postpartum - not sure if I should have been climbing them, but I received no instructions to the contrary. I hope I don't this time either because I'm not sure if it would be feasible - there are no downstairs bedrooms or bathtubs/showers in our home.
No experience with picking up a toddler, but that's one reason I'm glad we waited so long to have #2.
