Can anybody in Charleston give any suggestions on which hospital is the best to deliver a baby in? DH and I just started TTC and we don't have a doctor yet, so we may pick one that is affiliated with whatever hospital we choose to deliever at. Location really isn't an issue, we are open to traveling to any hospital that is in the Charleston and the surrounding areas. Thanks!
Re: Hospitals in Charleston
I delivered my first at East Cooper and had a wonderful experience. I have since remarried and am pregnant with #2 and will be delivering at MUSC this time. My husband and his ex-wife delivered a ful term son with a birth defect at MUSC. He ended up being in the NICU for 2 months and not coming out. MUSC was the only hospital equipped with the doctors on hand to deal with the emergency C-section and necessary infant surgery.
After spending 2 months in the NICU and meeting all kinds of families with the "not so perfect" delivery stories, my husband would not have us deliver at any other hospital. Nothing compares to a teaching hospital... AND my doc just told us it is $2K less than East Cooper!
Another East Cooper. It's a beautiful hospital.
If you are high risk, or are expecting a baby with complications, I would only deliver at MUSC downtown.
I delivered our 2nd at East Cooper in Mt Pleasant Feb 2011. It was beautiful and a great experience. The nurses were great. I am now pregnant with our 3rd and final due this April and this time we are delivering at St Francis in West Ashley. It is also a wonderful hospital... the only catch is since it is a catholic hopsital tubals or any other sterilizations are not possible. Kinda bummed about it but I will just have to wait until my 6week checkup.

This is such an intriguing post and thread to follow! I actually Work at MUSC in postpartum and Newborn Nursery. Though we are an older, well known hospital, we are a great one! The care and customer service you receive staying at MUSC is simply fantastic. (I know. Im one of the ones caring for you And your little one!)
There are other wonderful hospitals in the area. St Francis Is great. The location has only been open since 1996 (i think that's right bc I remember the grand opening.) The new East Cooper just opened in Mt Pleasant Easter of the year before last. I have only heard good things about them (even from my co-workers). My OB is right across the street from there and My husband and I will likely take a tour. Mt Pleasant Hospital just opened up this past year but I dont like how far away the location is... Way up hwy17 out toward Sewee. We live in West Ashley. I am happy to hear that Others have had good experiences at Trident. I however havn't heard any good things about that hospital. I have two friends, neither of them high risk, that almost lost their lives at Trident~one in the maternity ward and one in the emergency room with complications following a BTL (tubal).
My husband and I are taking a tour of the Charleston Birth Place this week. After visiting their website and speaking with Many people who have delivered there, we have strong feelings that (barring any complications), this will be the place for us. However, if there Are complications (with baby Or me), I would not hesistate to come to MUSC. What can I say? We are awesome
