XP: T-TTC an antidepressants

Hello.

I've been taking a bump break, so apologies for leaving without saying so.

We're rounding the corner into 2 years TTC #1. I've been seeing a therapist and going to support groups but my therapist thinks I'm depressed and I probably reluctantly agree.

In my past I had a very long bout (12ish years) with some intense depression and at the time I tried numerous (like more than 10) types of antidepressants. The last time I was on anything, Wellbutrin was what really worked for me.

I know a lot of about SSRIs and depression meds generically, so I know they can kill libidos and hamper sexiness but I also know that depression can diminish fertility. How's that for a double edged sword.

Are any of you on antidepressants and do you have special TTC recommendations for what works?

I too am seeing a therapist, and have read about anti depressants not only killing libido but increasing the likelihood of birth defects. However, if you're working closly with your doctor and they know you're still TTC, I'm sure you'll hear all the pros and cons in detail! I think as long as you're comfortable being completely open with your doctor, they'll work with you for the best option for you. GL! FX whatever path you choose, you feel more in control and eventually (ASAP)...get a sticky baby!

Hi there. For one, I am sorry about all that you are going through and I commend you for seeing a therapist. I really should do that too. I was on wellbutrin about a year before I started ttc. I didn;t have any side effects, no libido changes, but I know it differs from person to person. I was told I should go off it when we started ttc though. Maybe find out from a doc if there are any safe drugs to take?

Thanks. I'll be talking with my OB on Monday about this and seeing what her recommendation is. I was just hoping that someone had some info about what their doc said regarding specific drugs and TTC.

Hi there,

I hope you don't mind me posting. I am on Lexapro and have been since before I got pregnant due to severe OCD. Before we did IVF I sat with my psychiatrist and had a long talk about what to do. She told me that Paxil is the only category D medicine right now, but she expects that some of the SSRIs will be moved there shortly. The biggest problem with Lexapro is persistent pulminary hypertension in the newborn, especially if taken after 20 weeks, but my doctor is keeping me on it because she said in my case the stress and anxiety will be bad for the baby as well. She said she doesn't like to give medicines out unless she has to. I think the best thing to do is talk with a psychiatrist and weigh the benefits vs. the risks for your situation. I think most people will agree that if you can get by without them you should. At the same time, you might not be able to do that, and that's nothing to be ashamed of. I know what my life is off of medication and dealing with OCD, and I know for a FACT that would cause problems for my baby. Am I glad to be on it? No. But after multiple sessions with her, a peri, and talks with my family, we decided this was what we needed to do.

It's not easy. I wish you the best of luck in coming to a decision about this.
