We're going to the beach over Thanksgiving (a family tradition), but we decided to leave DD with my mom. Our condo is TINY, it's a studio, so everything is in one room. No separate bedroom or anything. I have a hard enough time getting her to nap with DS around in our home, much less a 200 sq ft condo where we'll be right on top of each other. So I decided it would probably be less stressful and easier on everyone to just leave her at home this year and take DS. Plus, it will be special one on one time for him. He loves going and is really looking forward to it.
Anyway...
I'm really nervous about leaving all that milk for my mom. She does great following directions and using common sense, unlike MIL, so I know she'll do exactly what I tell her. But I'm still nervous. I'm thinking the easiest thing to do is send her with my freezer stash, and then freeze the milk I pump at the beach when we get back. I don't pump any extra during the day now, so I think it would be impossible to pump enough extra milk for her to have 4 days worth without using my stash. Besides, isn't this the kind of thing a stash is for?
And it will really help rotate it, since we'll be approaching 3 months by that time.
Does that sound like the easiest thing to do? I'll just need to leave her specific directions about thawing. I'll tell her that it needs to be used within 24 hours of thawing, and thawed milk can sit out at room temp for 4 hours. I figured the best way for her to thaw would be take out 24 oz every night before bed and thaw in the fridge for the next day. Anything else you'd mention? I don't want to overwhelm her with details, but want to make sure I cover all the bases. I'll write it all down so she can put it on the fridge for reference. And I'll leave a can of formula too, just in case.
I'm alot more worried about my milk than I am leaving DD behind! Isn't that crazy?
Re: Help me think through vacation arrangements!
I haven't left DS overnight yet, but I'm already planning for a work trip where I'll leave DS with my DH - and I'm planning to do the same as you for breastmilk, have him thaw a day's worth each night. Your mom can always pull out an extra bag and defrost it in warm water if needed.
There's definitely no way I could pump that much fresh for him! I've been working on building my stash for months and I still only have 2-1/2 days worth in the freezer!
