Would you cook something with wine in it for a pregnant friend?

We are having a dinner party next weekend and I was planning on making Julia Child's Boeuf Bourguignon. When I was reviewing the recipe, I realized it has red wine. I would assume the alcohol would cook off, but I thought I would see what y'all thought.[Poll]

  • I said no, but I was super paranoid when I was pg.  I think it's nice that you are making dinner for your pg friend, regardless of what it is!

  • I voted you should ask her. I had no problem eating food with alcohol cooked in when I was pregnant, because it absolutely cooks off. Even if by some weird chance some didn't, there wouldn't be enough to have any affect. However, some people are very, very particular about stuff like that. I'd just shoot her an email or a phone call and see what she says to be sure.

Or just not tell her. Stick out tongue I kid, I kid.

  • While most of the alcohol cooks off when cooking with wine, not all of it does. I don't think it's enough alcohol to put a pregnant woman in danger, but to be on the safe side ask your friend how she feels about it.  If she's uncomfortable or you think she might be but is too polite to say anything, make a different dish.
  • I said you should ask her. When I was pregnant I had no issues with eating food that was cooked with wine.
  • I said yes make it, but with all the fabulous instructions I got from Dr. Berry (high risk dr), I wasn't as worried about foods as others were. I just went with the flow and enjoyed my normal meals instead of worrying about everything.

Either way I hope your meal turns out fabulous!

  • I wouldn't have a problem with it, but I still taste beer. I know judge away, but really the amount that's there is completely harmless. I have several friends from Ireland and they aren't even told to stop drinking during pregnancy, just to keep it to less than a glass a week.

  • If anything was ever in question, I always asked my PG friends how they felt about it.  Personally, I'd be fine with it, but I completely understand if others are nervous and would want to give them the chance to opt out.

  • If you ask her and she says no, I will gladly be a stand in pregnant woman willing to eat your alcohol laden meal.  Wink

  • Thanks guys! I'll touch base with her and see what she thinks. Hopefully it turns out well!
  • I haven't read any of the responses, but I'd say no.  I avoided alcohol during pregnancy and maybe she'll be the same way.  My dad is an epileptic and the meds he's on conflict badly w/ alcohol, so his neuro tells him not to even eat anything that has been cooked w/ alcohol, no matter if it burns off or not.  I take her word over anything else I've read.
