short term disability?

Has anyone ever used or will be using short term disability when they are out on maternity leave? I think I understand the gist of how it works. I just need a Dr's note right?

Re: short term disability?

  • Here in RI we pay into TDI (temporary disability insurance) which is through the state.  Once the doctor writes me out of work I will be able to collect (although it won't be my full pay) until I give birth.  Once I give birth I can collect TDI for either 6 (vaginal) or 8 (c-section) additional weeks.

So, if it's similar to RI, then yes, your doctor will need to submit paperwork and provide you with a note.

  • I took out an Aflac Short Term Disability policy right before I got pregnant for the main purpose of maternity leave. You have to arrange it through your employer. What I did is I had my secretary arrange to have the Aflac guy come into the office and he and I just sort of did everything right there and they take it out of my paycheck every 2 weeks. I should get 6 weeks for a vaginal delivery and 8 weeks for a c-section. I also took out a hospitalization policy so I should get some extra $$ for just being there and giving birth.

Only problem for me is that they have a 10 month "elimination period" where you can't give birth within 10 months after the policy becomes effective. Because I got pregnant so fast, that 10 month ends like a little over a week from my due date :-/   So I might not get it... My Aflac guy assured me though that we'll figure something out.

  • I have the same questions.  My employer will pay me for 4 weeks after birth, full pay and they said I might be able to collect short term disability, but he wasn't sure if it goes into effect after 30 or 60 days.  I really need to get on him to check it out.  But I'm in CT and I don't believe it's through the state, it's through my insurance company.

  • Ah ok, I guess every state is different. My open enrollment is in Jan., so I'm going to be siging up for it then. Good stuff, thanks ladies.

I have Aflac through work, too. You do have to have the policy in effect 10 months prior to giving birth. They will pay a % of your salary for either 6 or 8 weeks. The payment timeline goes into effect after using any paid vacation and sick leave through your employer.

Yeah they pay 60%. I don't have sick leave or vacation time so that doesn't apply to me. I called my Aflac guy right away after my BFP to let him know about the due date/elimination date problem and he said we'll file anyway no matter when the baby is born. If they deny the claim, we'll appeal and do our best. He said he has seen them approve claims they normally shouldn't have so he assured me not to worry the whole pregnancy. Worst case scenario, I'm taking off 8 weeks with no pay. Oh well! lol

For the rest of you ladies, you may want to double check whether your policy covers pre-existing conditions because that's a big deal as to whether they will cover or not.

  • I have TDI through the state of RI and I took out Aflac so I will get paid by both wich will allow me to stay out of work a few weeks after the normal 6 weeks with out pay.

  • I get 100% of my pay for 6 weeks (vag delivery) 8 weeks (c section).  It depends on how long you've been with the company though.  If it's not enough then you get a percentage of pay.  I can then take up to 12 weeks total with FMLA and which the rest 6 or 8 weeks will be unpaid and then I can take unpaid personal leave.  If I happen to be put on bed rest before hand I get paid STD for that too up to 20 weeks total (hopefully that won't happen though).

If you don't already have a STD policy in place, the plan most likely won't cover your current pregnancy.

  • My current job offers it as a benefit, but I didn't have it at my last job.

The plan here is 60% pay for 6 weeks (I think it's through Unum). There is a one week wait. I haven't looked into how I go about becoming qualified/eligible etc. I plan to meet with HR next week and discuss everything.

Its 6-weeks, except there is a 2-week unpaid waiting period so really only 4 weeks, paid at 60% and still taxable. So not that great, but better than nothing I guess.

  • I also have a waiting period - but it's only 1 week, but still unpaid - something good to check into!

We also had the option to enroll in a Supplemental STD benefit, which offers an additional 20% pay increase while you are out, so I can get 80% of my salary instead of the 60% - which i thought was great!
