He and his wife justs had their first baby last night.
The birth was incredibly traumatic for all involved. It's a long story, but to paraphrase, some bad calls were made, and mom and baby almost died. On top of that, when the baby's head popped out, the doctors saw she was gray and immediately panicked. She wasn't breathing and didn't breathe on her own for 6 hours.
She was born with a birth defect called Pierre Robin Syndrome which is characterized by micrognathia and a cleft palate. She has to have a tube to keep her airway open so she doesn't choke on her own tongue. She is still in the NICU.
My brother had to go home without his baby girl and he says it feels like she died because of the trauma of the situation and not having her with them. He doesn't have that glorious new father feeling because he is still reeling and hasn't had a chance to bond with her. He said this was the single most emotionally and psychologically traumatic even of his life, and it is breaking my heart.
They live in Montreal. It is killing me to not be there for him, though it wouldn't be feasible for me to go. I just want to hug him and his wife and that little baby girl. Prognosis is unknown at this point. They just have to keep her breathing. If you can spare a prayer for her and my brother and his wife, I would appreciate it.
