Quinns Birth Story - PIP (long)

image

Quinn James was born on Sunday, November 6th at 9:14pm. He is 6lbs and 1oz, 18 ? inches.

At my Tuesday appointment my blood pressure was still higher than ideal and had been consistently since week 33. I was given another 24 hr urine test to complete and was told that I would be notified on Friday of the results. If there was protein I would be induced over the weekend, if not we would decide what to so at next Tuesdays appointment.

I lost my mucus plug Wednesday night and contractions started Thursday. They were really mild and about an hour apart, at this point I was doing my best to ignore them and go about my normal business, Wednesday my boyfriend Chris had been to the doctor and was diagnosed with pneumonia. He had a fever of 102 for over a week. If I was to go into labor he would not be allowed into the birthing center with a fever, The doctor gave him some heavy duty antibiotics and by Friday he was feeling much better and his fever was gone.

Contractions continued through Friday and we went to see The Rum Diary, and to a Bar for some dinner. They were 10 minutes apart through the movie and dinner, I went home about midnight and I woke up at 4am Saturday morning with painful contractions about 7 minutes apart. I let Chris sleep and stayed awake for a few hours, My mom had called the night before to let me know that She would be leaving in the morning to head our way, she is 6 hours away,

Mom arrived at noon, Chris? family is in Michigan and threw us a baby shower via Skype 1:00. Mom and I walked about 3 miles that evening and I packed up my bag. We went to bed at 11:00 and by 12:30 I had woken Chris to start timing . We were at 5/1/1 so we woke my mom up and called the hospital. Took my blood pressure and it was 158/100.

We arrived at the birthing center and they were really busy. I was sent to triage and my contractions were registering but starting to space out and mellow out, I had a really bad headache that felt like it was turning into a migraine, They drew some blood, did some tests, my reflexes were ?extremely brisk? The Tylenol went down, and then I threw it all up. By this time I was shaking really bad and twitching a bit,

They decided to transfer me to a birthing suite so they could monitor me for a while, I was given IV anti nausea medication and Codeine and was able to sleep. My contractions had completely stopped at this point, I had dilated from 1.5 to 2 over night. The doctor came to see me around 6:00am and she gave me three options. I could stay in the hospital and complete another 24 hour test there, I could go home and see my doctor on Tuesday and possibly schedule an induction at that point if I was not in labor or I could stay and be induced. They have been concerned about pre e for weeks and I had all the symptoms except the protein.

I chose induction. I sent Chris home to sleep and They started me on Misoprostol at 9am. It is given vaginally and I was checked before it was given and I had dilated from 1 to 2 over night, I had to lay down for 2 hours and then could walk for one, I did two cycles of this and Chris was back half way through the second dose, I was thinning but not dilating, I was contracting about 5 minutes apart, They gave me a third dose of medication and by the end of it I was in serious labor, I walked about 15 minutes and Chris helped me into the tub for about 20 minutes. My contractions were about a minute apart and extremely painful, almost unbearable. I labored about 20 more minutes and was given Fentenyl via IV, They had talked about giving me Pitocin and for some reason I had thought they did, I didn?t realize I didn?t have Pitocin until after he was born, They said that it would last an hour. I was ready for the epidural within 30 minutes, The Fentenyl really did not do much at this point, I had 6 contractions while they were putting in the epidural and it took 5-10 minutes and it was complete relief. I could feel pressure but no pain, Honestly this was heaven compared to the pain of the contractions, At this point I was on the phone, watching TV, joking with Chris and my mom, Chris was blown away by the night and day change. The nurse came back in an hour to insert the catheter and she checked me again. In 1 hr I had dilated from 2 1/2 to 10!  The nurse was really surprised and said you are having a baby right now, he is right there!! I was trying not to push while she ran and got the doctor.

The doctor came in and broke my water. She asked me to do a test push and had me stop immediately so she could change into her delivery clothes, At this point we were ready to go. At the next contraction I was instructed to push, I went for it and he was out in one push, one contraction! He went straight to my chest and our whole lives changed,

I did not tear, There were no complications, Head to toe he is 100% healthy and absolutely perfect.

He latched easily and is feeding like a champ, every 2 hours since he arrived. He sleeps great so far, has not cried more than 5 seconds and that has happened twice, he didn?t even cry during his hep B vaccination,  We were released from the hospital this morning and have never been more in love with life and each other, We are so happy for this experience, this blessing, our new family.
