We looked at Consumer Reports ratings and went with the Graco Snugride 32. I know the Chicco Keyfit 30 also got great reviews.
I will say, I LOVED this insert for the seat when she was an infant. It helped keep her snug and kept her head upright when she fell asleep in the car.
We got a Snugride 35. It was between a Snugride and a KeyFit. I heard the KeyFit doesn't fit on the shopping cart. We went with the 35 because we got a good deal. I just went on Google Shopping and got it lots cheaper. I half-expected the base to be missing or something when it showed up but we were good to go. Just took several long weeks to get here...
We went with the Chicco Keyfit 30 (new-magic-brown one). I've been advised not to put the carseat on top of a cart for safety. We love it for several reasons-even though we obviously haven't used it yet...
It comes with a snuggie thing that is round to support baby's head (may help prevent baby from having a flat spot in the back). It has a built-in vent in the back so that the shade will pull very far forward in sun, bright lights, snow or rain. It also has something like a lap blanket that velcros over top of baby's lap. That's something you can buy separate but we don't have to since it comes with the seat.
It might be heavy with baby in it but we feel like we've made an extra-safe choice.
We're using the chicco carseat with a city mini stroller.

For an infant carrier we have the Baby Trend expedition. It came with the travel system.
Our convertable seat, which DS has been in since he was 5 months, is the Evenflo 65 and we LOVE it!! It's super easy to install and has an easy 5 point harness system that works just like the infant carrier. It has 3 easily adjustable recline position and the head rest also adjusts super easy! The straps are on rails, so they easily slide up and down to adjust, so there's never any need to rethread. It's roomy and comfy for DS and is a nice gender neutral color. It comes with the standard cupholder. The seat is RF 5-35lbs, FF to 65lbs and is a booster to 100lbs. It is the only carseat DS will ever need, and the best thing is it has fabulous consumer ratings AND was rated a 'good bet' by the NIHS!

I used the regular snugride and will be using it again. Just an FYI ---- you will most likely NOT be using the 35 until your baby is 35 LBS. Just a thought. When my LO weighed 20lbs I was sooooo ready to transition to the bigger car seat. Way too heavy....
We used the Snugride 32. My SIL had the Snugride 35 and she said it actually only goes up to 32 pounds or 32 inches (I can't remember which one). So she should have just gone with the 32, which was a little cheaper. We used it for the first year, though I stopped carrying her in it and just left it in the car when I got pregnant again.

We went with the Britax B-Safe car seat. We took advantange of the Britax sale (buy a stroller get a car seat free). It was still very pricey, but I think it will be worth it in the long run.
I have the Graco Snugride 32 that I have used for my first. It's a bit heavy, but works great and my baby has liked it and is still actually using it. I'm going to switch her to her new car seat soon (she'll be 1 on Friday) to make room for her new sister. Her new one is a Britax Boulevard 70.
I just go with the highest rates ones for safety and find a pattern I like.
We got the Peg Perego 30/30, and I couldn't be happier. The safety ratings are through the roof- it's made in Italy, and they have higher standards than here in the US. The padding is thicker under the legs than in many other seats we looked at, so it will be a little more cozy for LO. I also really like the side impact barriers by the head and in the seat itself.
Fwiw, we got the City Mini stroller and adapter to go with our seat- so don't think you have to go all one brand with your travel stuff..:o)

We are going with the Chicco KetFit 30 for an infant seat and the RECARO ProSport as a Toddler.
Both have come highly recommended from multiple sources and hundreds of reviews. I've linked them up for your convenience. Good luck with your choice.
