Flea control

Hi Ladies,

I'm looking for idea's on how to get rid of fleas for good before the baby comes.  I've had a problem with them off and on, and I have no idea how they get so bad since my cats are indoor only.  I keep my cats treated with Frontline, but as soon as it starts to wear off I see fleas on them... never fails.  Must be the carpets are infested.  I'm not sure what would be okay to use during pregnancy.  We used a carpet powder to kill fleas years ago and that worked well, but I'm not sure it's okay to be around.  I'm afraid if even a tiny bit is left in the carpet after vacuuming and I came in contact with it, it could harm the baby.  Anyone have this problem or any advice how to get rid of these buggers once and for all?

  • If you can with hold from vaccuming the floors than this will work.  Take table salt and sprinkle it on your carpets.  Let it sit for atleast 12 hours.  This will make the flea die.  The salt will pull out all the air out of the fleas air on the floor (I know sounds strange) Than 12-24 hours later vaccum

  • I was actually going to suggest table salt too. We had HORRIBLE fleas last summer, and frontline did NOTHING. My dog was covered, and they were all over the house. We switched the dog to Comfortis (not sure if there is something like that for cats? It's a pill they take monthly and I have never seen a single flea on our dog since he started taking it) and I sprinkled table salt all over the house. The dog didn't mess with it, and neither did the kids. I vacuumed a day later, and haven't seen a flea in the house since.

  • They have flea killing vaccum filters that just suck them up and wipe them out inside of the vacuum. And I use the power stuff and I've never noticed any issue with it. As long as you don't just sit there in the room with it sitting on your carpet, you'll be fine.

  • I work in animal health and to be honest with you, a lot of people complain about resistance issues with Frontline.  I would talk to your veterinarian about a stronger product that doesn't contain fipronil (that's the ingredient that is said to be forming resistance).  If you continue to see fleas towards the end of the monthly application, you're just repeating their life cycle.  Best of luck!
  • Last year my parents found this thing at Rural King or Farm and Fleet (not sure if they have these nationwide) that is sort of like a mouse trap. It comes in two pieces, that you put together sort of like a little house--the top portion has a light bulb and the bottom portion has this very sticky layer  You sit it on the floors and the fleas are somehow attracted to the light and get stuck and die (Hopefully this makes sense).

We used this after we had already put the flea powder on the carpets and vaccummed and bombed the house.

  • Wow, I'm taking notes here, as our pup seems to have come down with fleas in the last few weeks. I'm taking him to the vet tomorrow, but the salt tip is awesome. Thanks ladies!

  • We used Frontline and it didn't work for our dog. The only thing we use now and works 100% is Advantage. Fleas suck, I am in FL and they get bad here in the summer but Advantage works like a miracle.

  • We also had flea issues with Frontline, our vet switch the dog to a new topical called Vectra 3D and it seems to be working a lot better. Interesting suggestions about the table salt though.

  • I'm allergic so not only do I know if theres even ONE flea in the house, but its miserable to me. Not thats its never stopped me from having a house full of pets. unfortunately with fleas, you need to treat them like live. Just throw out every bomb youve got or that one little sh** left is gonna somehow multiply itself. Its a pain in the butt and expensive but it works. Apply advantix (I find it works better than frontline) to the shoudler blades of each animal (I find you only need one dose if you do everything I'm about to say so you dont need to buy an expensive pack for each animal), set off bombs in as many rooms as possible, and wash EVERYTHING. I mean-- everythingggggg. I even went so far as to use flea shampoo rather than detergent.
    Good luck!!

  • BORAX soap!! It is a powder soap that could be used for laundry or cleaning. Comes in a box. the powder itself looks like comet.

Sprinkle it all over your carpet, sofa clothes etc. It is pet safe and people safe. Just dont EAT it! But leave it for about an hour or more. Then vaccume it up. The active ingrediant is Borax acid. Which kills the flea eggs, larve, roaches, ants etc. the acid level is so low that it doesnt harm pets or us. I use it all the time. I have 3 dogs and a kitty. No fleas and only the outside dog is on flea product. NO fleas.

This. Then I would recommend vacuuming at least every other day for a couple of weeks to catch any stragglers. Make sure you wash any bedding that the cats use or have access to in really hot water too.

  • I have heard that if you use a spray bottle full of green rubbing alcohol and spray it over the carpet the fleas will die.
