January 2011 Moms

2 unrelated ??s

1. I have a warm mist humidifier and cool mist humidifier. When does life call for warm and when does life call for cool?

2. When you are out with IRL mom friends, do you each drive a separate car or have you or your IRL friend moved their car seat to the other's car?

Re: 2 unrelated ??s

  • no clue about the humidifier, sorry!

When I go out with my mom friend neighbor, we drive separately. It just seems easier that way.

  • 1. I think warm is to break up congestion? Cool, I have no idea. Well in reality I have no idea about either! LOL

    2. Depends, if we are driving local we just take 2 cars. If we drive downtown or something we usually move carseats so we can all ride together Smile

  • I read a cool humidifier was best for baby, so that is all we have.  I have no idea why.

I don't have any IRL mom friends that I see on a regular basis, but when I do see them we usually drive separate.

  • Also, no idea on number 1.

Number 2, people can ride with me, but I am not unbuckling my car seat and setting it up in their car for them to drive. I dont trust many people behind the wheel, but me.

This!! We also take the cab together since you don't require a carseat for cabs.

Why would a carseat not be required in a cab?  Is there some sort of magical force-field that somehow keeps babies safe in a cab that regular cars don't have?

I also don't understand why you wouldn't use a carseat in a cab? I would trust a random stranger cab driver less than someone I at least know.

  • 1. We only have a cool mist. We had a warm vapor one when Joshua was little and he picked up the core and burned his foot through his sock with the boiling hot water. Not fun.... seriously.

    2. We always take our own cars.

Yea, I don't know why it's not required but the law just says it not required, so I never really use car seat in the cab. If we do have it because we were using it with the stroller, we use it but it's not something I go out of my way to carry. I initially thought it was weird too but then I got used to it. I am very scared she will get used to not being in the car seat in a car and not want to do it...so we try to limit our travels by cab but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. I don't use the subway or bus with her, so yea cab it is.

And MarSam, I do hold her in my hands, on my lap, she stands, looks around, etc.  Many countries do not have car seat laws...so they just hold their babies.... but there is always two people in the car. When we were younger and went to places that didn't require car seats like in the Caribbean, Asia and South America, our parents just held us.

  • Gotcha! I had no idea that law existed. I think its a little crazy, to be honest!

  • 1. There's been a lot of debate on humidifier temperature. The cool mist supposedly helps the nasal passages "shrink" (not the word but I haven't had coffee yet). Our ped said warm room - cool humidifer, cool room - warm humidifier.

    2. I've moved my infant seat to my friends' cars but I doubt I'll do it with the regular car seat because it'll be too much of a pain. If we were going a long distance I would, but not for short distances. (Also, I stopped the day she was texting and driving and we had 3 close calls.)

    3. car seats in cabs: when I was little there were no car seats at all. My dad had a truck for work that was like a mail truck and we'd jump around in the back while he was driving. Anyone have a station wagon growing up? Remember putting the seats down and laying there? Car seats are safer, but I'm just saying that they're relatively new and still not mandatory in every country so I guess I'm not horrified by a couple of short trips without one (especially since you're usually traveling relatively slowly in a cab - not like on a highway). BUT - I think in NY they are actually legally required, but just most people don't bring them and the cabs don't turn you away.

Yea I looked it up when I was preg bc I was freaking out. I always saw people not use them but didn't care much then but when I got preg, I thought to myself, am I supposed to lug the seat around??? And with an infant carrier, it's fine but a convertible car seat???

  • ugh... after reading about the carseats I don't remember the first quesiton.

#2: I generally just hook up Jay's carseat in the other persons car. Sometimes we will drive seperate though. It doesn't matter to me. It takes 5 seconds to unhook and 5 seconds to hook up. I would not do it if I didn't trust the driver though.

  • Okay I am going to beat this to death but i don't care if it gets you to reconsider using a carseat in a cab.

  • #1 Heat is for congestion. Cool is dry skin, nose, eyes & throat.

#2 Sometimes I let my mom drive & she has a separate carseat for my oldest.

But most of the time, I will just drive separately. I don't trust many people driving my kids unless its absolutely necessary

That is disturbing. Im not trying to slam you Mishu, but I wouldnt ride in a cab after seeing that.  I have been tailgated with LO in the car and pulled over, or pulled into a driveway to let them pass. People are crazy. Im sure its tough in the city, but hopefully there is another mode of trasportaiton. Do you have a car too? I have never been to NYC, I dont know the logistics of it exactly.

Also, Valley- I am not picturing some sort of campaign that you will run to stop this! lol Valley Goes to Washington!
