2nd Trimester

XP from 3rd tri: short femur length on u/s, anyone else?

Hi ladies, I'm wondering if anyone else had this happen and can offer some insight or reassurance.  I had a follow up u/s today, at 24 weeks, to check on my baby's measurements.  At my 20 wk u/s, they said the baby was measuring small (1-2 weeks behind), so that's why they did another one today. Basically the head is in the 50th %ile, the abdomen is slightly smaller than that, and the femur is in the 3-8 th  percentile.  I have to go to the hospital to get a more detailed scan, probably within a couple weeks.  The OB wasn't super worried bc I had really good results on my genetic testing, and the baby looks healthy otherwise, but I am still worried and wondering if anyone else had this happen.  Thanks so much.

  • Hi....so we had much the same issue at our 20 week scan.  Went in and everything was measuring great except for a slightly short femur and humerus.  They told us that was a soft marker for DS and that we needed another ultrasound in 4 weeks (today) and they referred us to a fetal medicine specialist. We have decided from the outset that we want no genetic testing because even if our little one had something wrong with him or her we couldnt do anything about it.  So when they told us this we were so SO scared....it made us rethink everything, should we have further tests or maybe even the amnio that we are both so scared about having.  But after a lot of research we found that this is a really soft marker and when found on its own rarely means anything bad and that a lot of people get this meaurement and the baby turns out to be a perfectly healthy baby. We decided to wait until the ultrasound today and hope that it had evened itself out.  Went in today thinking we would get bad news on this measurement again but no......our little man was wriggling around like crazy and the measurements have totally caught up and EVERYTHING is perfect.  What a relief.....it really was the best day!!  So try not to worry about these measurements.  It will hopefully all even itself out and your baby will catch up on these measurements.  Its so easy to get scared, I know we were but sit tight and pray that is all ok at the next U/S.  Good luck!!
