LO is just a little over 5 months and I feel he's ready for solids. Can somebody give me a breakdown of how to begin. How often, how much, best methods & etc? Thanks in advance!
I would like to know too! LO is 6 months and 1 week today, and I still have not started because I think I am over-thinking the whole thing.
My in-laws got us a baby bullet so I am going to make his food, but I just don't know the "right" way to start...how much (oz), how often, when do you increase the amount and frequency, when do you decrease the amount of milk in bottles?
The only thing I can say with confidence is veggies first, then fruits. Pedi also recommends trying a food for at least 3 days before moving on to the next food (for allergy reasons).
I started giving him 1.5 oz of cereal once a day, but that is just for practice. The ladies at the DCP have been slowly thickening it up.
A few weeks ago I finally dropped one of his feedings so he now gets 5 bottles a day, and I think I am ready to really start solids now.
This is a good website for tips. I don't know what's "right", but here's what we did:
- I started with about 1 tsp on a plate, but sectioned into threes. I feed her from one section at a time, and keep feeding until she really protests. This way, I can save the sections that she hasn't eaten from as they don't have saliva in them.
- We did avocado for a week, then added apple (applesauce). We'll add pears this week.
- We start a new food each Friday. Our pedi actually recommended 8-10 days between new foods to make sure there were no side effects. We're going with 7 days.
- New foods are always in the morning. Once she had been on avocado for a week, we started doing that whenever we have our evening meal, with applesauce in the mornings. Once we've added pears, she'll do breakfast, lunch, and dinner. So, our schedule is:
8am nurse
930am solids (whatever is new that week)
12pm nurse
(2pm solids will be added once she has been on apples (her second food) for 7 days)
4pm nurse
6pm solids (anything she's been on for over a week)
