Can I do anything here (sleep related)?

So, about 2 weeks into Anna's transition to one-nap (with daylight savings time thrown in the middle just for fun...), and I'm just wondering if there is anything I can do to get her to sleep more.    Yeah, I do realize she is sleeping plenty for a kid her age, but she is sleeping a lot less than she used to and still waking up earlier.

Right now, her day looks like:

5:30/6:00am - wake up

11:30/12pm - nap for 1.5 hours

6:30/6:45pm - bedtime

(She used to sleep 6:30am-6:30pm and nap 3-4 hours a day when she had two naps)

She is EXHAUSTED, both by 11:30 for her nap and by 6:30pm for bed.   Like, drunken pirate, laying on the floor, crankypants exhausted.     But then she only naps for 1.5 hours and wakes up so darn early.  There was a few days when she napped for 2-3 hours and slept until 7 or 7:30am, but then DST hit and it all went to crap.

Is there anything I can do?   I feel like she would need to nap later for me to move back bedtime, but she'd have to sleep later in the morning for me to push back nap time.    Might things get better the further we get from the DST change?   Or is this probably our new schedule and I just need to suck it up?

  • I am laughing at the "drunken pirate, laying on the floor" analogy. Jake is a Pro at this too!

I don't really have any advice. Except she is in transition mode..and you need to just kind of push through it. You might also need to revisit CIO for a bit. We did! Espeically since she is only napping1.5 hrs which a little to short IMOP. Especially since she used to nap for 3 hrs before right?!

It will get easier momma I promise!!

  • hmm...i'm still holding on strong to two naps :)

I would think that after a couple of rough days, if you wanted to push her bedtime back some, she would eventually start sleeping longer, either in the morning (hopefully!) or for a nap...but who knows...kids are mysterious sometimes :(

I'd be tempted to go back to one nap...but I forget why you made the switch, so that might change my mind.

  • She needs to wake later and go to bed later and I think that will extend her afternoon nap.   Also, 6:30 - 11:30 is a long stretch at her age.  When G is that tired, his naps get shorter - I'm guessing he's overtired and not sleeping well.

I would try putting her down at 9:30 for a 1/2 hour nap, just to push through if she needs it the first day. Then I'd put her down again at 12:30 for a nap and wouldn't put her to sleep until 7:30 for bedtime.

See...  I have tried to let her CIO when she wakes up after 1.5 hours... but she just does not go back to sleep.   We've given her a good 30-45 minutes in there with the hopes she'll figure it out to no avail.   Boo.

We did it because she started waking up at 4:30/5:30am...   and everyone seemed to agree with our gut instincts that she was getting too much daytime sleep.   So we forced the one-nap to cut back on her daytime sleep a bit.    But she's still waking up at 5:30am.   FML.     LOL!

  • Oh man, I wish I knew!

How long has this been going on? Is she maybe just getting used to the change? There were a lot of things that moved on her, maybe it's just a matter of time? Despite what my pedi might say, I'd be inclined to try pushing her bedtime and nap a little later, but that's because I can't fathom a bedtime before 630! :)

FWIW (very very little, I'm sure), Will is now sleeping from 7:30pm (by the time bedtime routine is done and he's asleep) until 6-615am. He goes down for his nap around noon and sleeps for around 2 hours.

Early wakeups are the worst. I hope she starts sleeping in for you soon!

  • DD was just like this for about 4 weeks. No advice just wanted to tell you that she settled back to a good 2.5-3 hrs of napping on her own. It was miserable while she figured it out though.

1 suggestion, maybe try putting her down for nap a little earlier and see if she isn't so overtired she sleeps better?

  • Gradually keep her up later by a few minutes both for nap and bed and see if that helps?

  • When does she eat lunch? I have found that DD, although she is a horrible sleeper, does sleep better after she eats and poops. She wakes up between 6-7 and eats lunch between 11-11:30 and usually poops within 30 min and goes down for nap immediately after diaper change. If she doesn't poop within 3o min I go ahead and put her down.
