Just Curious...

But how much do you plan on spending for baby furniture?? This is our first and we have looked around at many different places for baby furniture (crib, dresser/changing table, and gliders) We found several convertible/grow with me cribs that we liked and I am in love with the madison changing table system at pottery barn but $1400 for just that seems a little excessive. I was just wondering how much everyone else is planning to spend or thinks it is reasonable to spend on everything. FWIW I plan on the same furniture being in my child's bedroom for basically ever which is why we are going with grow-with-me styles...LoL!

Re: Just Curious...

  • this is my first also, i got two bassinetts ((spelling))?  for twenty dollars i dont have a huge income so i look for the best deals, like craigs list, or resale stores, i've gotten so many good deals its redic. when it comes down to it i just look for good deals.

  • Crib - $150

    bookshelf - $120

We'll need a small can of white paint to repaint the cabinet we are using for the changing table.

Maybe a toy chest, which we'd probably get used, less than $100.

And some sort of rocker or glider, hopefully one that reclines. That could be expensive, but we'd get one that we could later move to the living room.

  • We are spending around $150-170 on the Graco Lauren crib, then we'll probably get a dresser from Ikea to put the changing pad on.  We haven't picked out a glider yet and I know that will probably be the pricier item we will get. We are planning on having a few children (hopefully!) and will be leaving the nursery intact and buying new furniture as the children get older and are in their own rooms. I don't really see a point in spending a ton of money on a nursery.

  • Good question!  I think we're planning on using a crib for baby 1 (and hopefully 2), and will just buy a bed when #1 is ready. . .

We have a dresser that we will use for dresser/changing table, so all we're going to buy furniture-wise is a crib.  I've got an old fashioned awesome rocker, so I'm hoping to use that as well - but I do love those Pottery Barn gliders.

  • Crib- $100 (Ikea Gulliver)

    Dresser- $299 (Ikea Hemnes)

Glider- Free (Well, we are painting and recovering a hideous one my mother has had for years so I estimate about ~$30 in materials.)

Book shelf- Free (We are re-purposing one that we already had.)

    So, total- ~$430

ETA: We plan to keep the dresser in LOs room for a years to come (or at least somewhere in the house), but plan to let him pick out a "big boy" bed when the time comes. Tastes change and cribs often take a beating, so it wasn't important to us to invest in something expensive. The Gulliver is well-rated and it's a real bonus that it's so cheap so we don't care if he chews it to pieces like a lot of babies do to their crib.

  • I spent $80 on a crib and that was it for his room. We have an arms reach cosleeper for our room that was a gift. I spent over $500 though converting our bonus room into a playroom - lots of shelves, baskets, and some chairs from IKEA.

  • Not sure. There was a munire set on closeout i loved for 2k that included 4 pieces so i hope to be able to get all for that price

  • Crib- Ikea: 100

    Mattress:150

We already have a horrendously ugly but comfortable rocking chair that we will use instead of buying a new glider, and I think we will switch out our current small dresser for the baby's room (and just use that for changing) and buy a larger one for ourselves.

There isn't room for much else in the room, so we are not trying to find furniture that will last for years.

  • We spent a little over $3600 (with tax and delivery) for the nursery when I was pregnant with DS.  This was to be his forever furniture.  We never expected to be blessed with a second pregnancy.

DS's new room is going to cost $2764 with tax and delivery but this will also last until the children move out.

  • There is a 3 piece set I like that is on sale for 899. But I am not sure I want all 3 of the pieces. The 2 spare bedrooms in our house are fairly small, so I was thinking I just wanted a crib and a dresser (changer on top of the dresser) and then a glider. So probably in total less than $1K. The crib is a convertible.

  • I'd like to spend as little as possible.  At the moment all we have to buy is a crib.  I plan to use my old bedroom furniture (which is still in good condition) for the baby, that way it'll "grow" with him.

  • We are doing either the Ikea crib or Graco crib, do that will be under $160. Then probably a consignment or Ikea dresser. I am not using a changing table; but will just be putting a pad on the dresser. I do want a nice upholstered rocker glider with an ottoman, so that will be the most expensive thing. I'm planning on getting artwork off etsy and storage baskets from target...so a pretty cheap nursery all in all.

I do not know anyone who has actually gotten their money's worth from a convertible crib. Have you read Baby Bargains? Very helpful book!

  • Crib- $100 from Ikea

Changing Table- about $80 with pad and everything from Ikea

    Cradle- free (Family heirloom)

    Dresser- free (from family)

    Rocking Chair- free (from family)

Pack n Play- $10 (from yard sale)

I think we are really just going to have to focus on bedding, and accessories for the nursery.  We don't plan on buying the crib for a little while because we have the cradle that Biscuit will sleep in for the first 3 months or so.
