Talk to me about your kid's bed...

J is 21 months and still in a crib. She has climbed/fallen out once but since then (and realizing it hurt) hasn't tried it again. I'd like to keep her in there as long as possible, just because the idea of her having access to everything in her room makes me nervous. But, when the time comes to transition her, I don't know what to move her to.....

So, I guess my questions are:

-When did you move your daughter/son out of her/his crib?

-What did they sleep on next?

-Did it work for you and him/her?

-Did you worry about your child getting into drawers or closets, pulling things down, or climbing on things?

  • -When did you move your daughter/son out of her/his crib? Around 2.5 years - I think it was Christmas time last year so maybe 2 yrs 3 mo.

-What did they sleep on next? A full size bed with rails on the side

-Did it work for you and him/her? Pretty good. She still gets out of bed some nights and comes to our room but I guess that's to be expected.

-Did you worry about your child getting into drawers or closets, pulling things down, or climbing on things? No, we can hear her form our room and she sleeps iwth the door open

  • We moved ds around 2 years. He loved the bed and the first week was easy! We talked about it for days before we got the new bed (Ikea twin, low to the ground). After a week he figured out that he could get out, so we had a few days of putting him back in a lot, but now he gets it and does really well. Also he can get out in the middle of the night if he has to pee (he's three now). He doesnt get into anything in his room except what's on the bookshelf, which is fine.

  • I still haven't moved Max! I just love knowing he's contained up there, especially since he doesn't sleep at "nap" time. Big Smile

  • -When did you move your daughter/son out of her/his crib? around 18 mos.

-What did they sleep on next? We got one of the extendable toddler/twin beds from Ikea.  It is in the toddler stage right now.

-Did it work for you and him/her? Totally, she loved it and has done awesome in it.

-Did you worry about your child getting into drawers or closets, pulling things down, or climbing on things? I did, but she LOVES her bed and loves being in it.  Every once in a while she will get down at nap time and grab a book and get back into bed, but otherwise she stays in it.  Even in the mornings when she wakes up, she stays there and calls for us to come get her.  I'm really not sure how we got so lucky that she's done so well.

  • I haven't moved Liam yet.  Putting it off until after we travel for the holidays.  If we had a bigger room, I would move him straight to a twin bed, but since the room is small we are getting an IKEA kids bed.  Will probably start by taking the side off of his crib (converting to a toddler bed).

I'm dreading this though...Liam usually takes 30-45 minutes to fall asleep at night...not sure how that will go when he can get up and leave his room!

  • -When did you move your daughter/son out of her/his crib?  We moved M just before he turned 3.  I think before that for 2 months he was in his conv. crib.

-What did they sleep on next? He moved into his big boy room, in a twin.

-Did it work for you and him/her? yup. No issues.

-Did you worry about your child getting into drawers or closets, pulling things down, or climbing on things?  Nope, he wasnt napping any more, so bedtime was fairly easy. If he does get out, he comes to find us or go potty.

  • -When did you move your daughter/son out of her/his crib? about 18mos (he was in a pack-n-play and just outgrew it)

What did they sleep on next? Toddler bed, we were given one and it takes up less space than a twin, so figured we'll use it for a few years ...

Did it work for you and him/her? Yes, no problems. But he had been sleeping on a mat at school for months by then anyway. We did put pool noodles under the fitted sheets to help keep him from falling out. just removed them.

Did you worry about your child getting into drawers or closets, pulling things down, or climbing on things? No, I thought about gating his doorway, but bedroom is secure, house is small, I hear every noise.

  • -When did you move your daughter/son out of her/his crib? @ 20 months old. I wanted to move her out of the crib with enough time before #2 arrives.  I don't want it to be a big shock.

-What did they sleep on next? Their crib mattress on the ground.

-Did it work for you and him/her? Yes.  The first few days were challenging, but other than that it's gone pretty well.

-Did you worry about your child getting into drawers or closets, pulling things down, or climbing on things? We had just moved into our new house, so I made her room "unsupervised-toddler-friendly".  Low bookshelf, sturdy dresser, board books, stuffed animals, etc.

  • My kid's bed is just simple, but i'll answer up the q's really quickly.

-When did you move your daughter/son out of her/his crib? -> at around the middle of my kid's 1st year...let's say 18-23 months.

-What did they sleep on next? -> a good toddler bed with a good toddler bedding that comforts the kid so much at sleep.

-Did it work for you and him/her? -> there are adjustment but it really work out pretty well in time.

-Did you worry about your child getting into drawers or closets, pulling things down, or climbing on things? -> Yes, but i'm making sure that everything is safe.

  • -When did you move your daughter/son out of her/his crib? Around 20 months.  We had just moved into our new house, I was (still am) PG with DS, so we needed the crib.... We just decided to go for it.

-What did they sleep on next? Crib mattress on the floor.

-Did it work for you and him/her? Yup.

-Did you worry about your child getting into drawers or closets, pulling things down, or climbing on things? Well we had just moved into a new house, so I only put in her room furniture that I knew was safe for her and toys that I was ok with her playing with.  She mostly sticks to the books and brings them over to her mattress to read them (if she's not sleeping during nap time, for example).

  • -When did you move your daughter/son out of her/his crib? 3 years old, about 2 months ago.

-What did they sleep on next? My parents got him a Cars toddler bed for Christmas that still uses the crib mattress and has side bars.

-Did it work for you and him/her? Pretty good. It varies often, he will go a week without getting out and then randomly get out 2-3 times during the night (like last night).

-Did you worry about your child getting into drawers or closets, pulling things down, or climbing on things? Not really, we still have his video monitor in there so I can see when he gets out of bed.

  • -When did you move your daughter/son out of her/his crib? 2.5 exactly. He wasn't climbing out of his crib or anything, but we needed it for the new baby.

-What did they sleep on next? Twin bed.

-Did it work for you and him/her? It's been AWESOME. He has never had ONE issue. Stays in bed, doesn't freak out, doesn't even have a rail. I rolled up some towels as a temporary hump to keep him from falling out until I could get a pool noodle, and he is one of those weird sleepers who never moves, so he has not fallen out at all.

-Did you worry about your child getting into drawers or closets, pulling things down, or climbing on things? Nope. He has gotten out of bed during nap and gotten himself a truck or a book, but he gets back into bed with it.
