Hey girls,
Pits been a rough week for us. Last week Adam got what appeared to be a cold that quickly turned into a bad case of croup which landed us in choa for a day. Ansley got a fever yesterday and I took her to the doctor. She has been coughing and sneezing a little, but still eating good. The doctor discounted the fact that she most likely has the virus (both myself and mom also caught it ) and wanted to put in a catheter to check for kidney infection. It was a doctor at my practice that I have never seen before and I told him no. I have never actually told the doctor no before. The nurse did tell me on the way out it was the decision she would have made so that made me feel better. I promised to come back this morning if the fever still existed. Luckily Ansley's fever is gone but she still feels bad.
What do you all think? Anyone with baby girls that has had a kidney infection that can tell me how your baby acted? I of course will call the nurse back this morning but my regular pedi doesn't work on Tuesday and now I am not quite as trusting of just any doctor in the practice.
Re: Sick baby need advice
I put a lot of stock in my mommy instinct. Especially since the nurse backed you. As long as she doesn't appear to be in pain, isn't running a super high fever, etc. I would wait until a doctor I was more comfortable with was back seeing patients.
My vote is that you did the right thing! We ended up at the ER in Disney once when Tess was a baby. She had an ear infection w/ high fever and I refused all kinds of sh!t they wanted to put her through. I knew it was just a freaking ear infection, we didn't need a catheter, X-ray.
I would have done the same. With the fact that Adam was sick plus you and your mom I would definitely think it's the same thing unless it was completely different symptoms. I find it odd the doctor wanted to go straight to a catheter with everything else going on.
To be honest, our pedi doesn't work on tuesday either so I try very hard not to take the boys on tuesdays. There are only a few of the other doctors I trust at our practice and will take the boys too.
Did they check for strep throat? Its rare in babies so they don't usually even bother checking. But sure enough, Sophie had it last week. Thankfully the urgent care doc had enough sense to swab her. He said strep is going around right now and especially in our area. Although, I'm 90% sure she picked it up on the cruise based on the incubation period. Anyway, I probably would have said no to a cath as well.
