Bedtime question - and night sleep

Right now, DD (4 weeks) is in an eat, wake, sleep routine. Occasionally, she will fall asleep while nursing and I let her sleep when she does. She has always been good about waking, nursing then back to sleep overnight. We currently put her in PJs, swaddle, feed whenever she wakes around 9-10pm...sometimes as late as 11pm. At what point does this become too late?

since she will nurse and go right back down between the time we "officially" put her to bed and wake for the day between 6-7am, I am afraid that if we move up bedtime, we are tempting fate b/c she does so well overnight and really doesn't need 12 consecutive hours overnight. Ideas? Suggestions?

  • As she gets older she'll naturally fall into an earlier bed time. At 4 weeks she's still kind of sleeping whenever she's ready.

Probably between 8 - 10 weeks you'll want to start getting her ready for bed during her awake time in the evening so that she'll be ready for bed when she gets sleepy around 7-9.

I wouldn't be in a big hurry to get her to bed earlier and if she's sleeping well at night don't rock the boat! :)

  • DD stays up til about 11 too. she'll "nap" from about 9-10 to where we might move up her bedtime to nine when we move her to the bassinet or crib but right now we co sleep so it's easiest to just take her upstairs w/ us when we go to bed.  If your LO doesn't wake until 6am i'd keep it how it is for now, that's wonderful! We're up around 4 am then up for the day at 7am.

LOL! I wish.  She is up a few times to nurse or with gas. But at night, she will easily go back to sleep. We know she is starting "daytime" when she's awake in the morning.

  • I'd leave it for now, and just move it up VERY gradually later. We are starting out bedtime routine now around 7, but at 4 wks old, the few times we tried this, it backfired on us big time. Even 2 weeks ago, we tried starting at 7 and it wasn't good (we  were starting around 8 or 8:30 at that time). I think they just sort of change their patterns naturally> But when they're still eating every 3 hours round the clock, I don't know that it matters all that much.

This sounds about right.  I wouldn't change anything until you notice it's not working anymore.

  • That's awesome that she is sleeping so well! Our little girl is 5 weeks and she sleeps from 8 or 9pm until 7am. For the past week or so, i wake up to pump at 3am. I wouldnt rock the boat either for her bed time, but if you really wanted to try something try a bath routine. We bathe our LO around 630-7pm and then nurse her and she usually is a sleep by 9pm. I find the bath wakes our little one up.

  • I'm of the belief that there is no bedtime with a NB. I try to feed DS around 9-10 pm so I can go to bed around 10 and then he wakes up normally around 1:30 and 5:30 or so. Trying to institute a bedtime for them at this point seems stupid to me.

  • If it was me, I would probably experiment with doing bath and nursing at 8 and laying down at 9, just to see what happens. If it didn't work, then I'd revert back.
