MOM-Indian Giver-VENT

Angry ARRRGGG> My mother had offered to purchase our babies crib. That would be their gift to their grandson. Which I said was an amazing offer. I emailed her the crib which was listed at almost $400.00 at the time (last month).

She was ready to purchase it right then...but at the time i was only 16 weeks. So she said she would hold off until my 20 week apt. when we found out the sex.

Now the crib went up in price. It went up to $529.00. So today, she said that the baby wouldnt need a crib really, cause you usually only use it not EVEN a year. WTF?!

I called the company and got them to lower it to $476.00.

I am just annoyed. Either way ..I can and will purchase the crib. Money is not the problem. I just hate when someone says they will do something and not follow through.

It was a generous offer on her part and i appreciate the offer. Sorry just had to bang my baby rattle and whine. LOL

  • I understand that it is frustrating to think you have something crossed of your list and then realize its not, especially when the list is so long getting ready for the baby. While money may not be an issue for you, could it be an issue for your mom? Would you be willing to go down to a cheaper crib or maybe she could purchase something that is less expensive that the baby will absolutely need like a car seat. 476$ is a big chunk of money and while she may really want to help you she might not be able to help you financially that much.

on a side note "indian giver" is a pretty racially offensive phrase.

  • My LO didn't sleep in his crib for the first 9 months, but at 19 months he's still in it. You'll definitely need it. Sorry your mom is being a pain!
  • Is it possible that she was trying to trick you that she wasn't going to buy it for you and wants to surprise you?  (my mom does annoying things like that).

Either way, I bet she'll feel like poop once you buy it yourself!  (give yourself a bruise or something putting it together to really drive it home!)

Someone needs to send out a PSA to the world: don't tamper with the preggos... could be dangerous.

  • "Indian-giver" is very offensive.

My DS was in his crib until he was 2.5.  Especially given how long you use it, if you have to buy it yourself it's not the end of the world.

Yeah...I'm Native American, that one kind of stings. I know you might not have meant it that way, but that's just one of those phrases that really digs in.

Have you thought of a convertible crib? I have seen quite a few that go from crib to toddler daybed to a headboard for a full-sized bed. That might invalidate the argument that it isn't a useful purchase - it could be an 18-year investment!

  • Seems expensive for a crib.
  • Aye that is a pain. I can imagine your frustrations. My mother offered to buy our travel system until after she saw the one we picked and told us that she will pick a cheaper one she likes. At this point I just figured buy what you want and if they want to give you something great if not oh well. As far as how long the baby will stay in a crib...seriously what child at 1 will not be using a crib?? Not all can even walk at that point yet.

  • Kinda in the same boat. My DH grandpa said he would purchase the crib. We picked out one that is $399. I made DH call and ask how we would go about this and he said he would write a check for $100.... A $100 is better than nothing.

  • We purchased a convertable crib and DD sleeps in it every night.  It's a daybed now and has been since she was about 1 1/2, but it's still being used, so I don't think they are a waste of money.

This. Ours is a convertible and it was less than $200.

  • My advice is from here on out, get a price limit on what is being offered. If what you really want ends up costing more, you can make up the difference yourself or with the help of gift cards/another giver.

  • What that is crappy. I would have a little talk with her to see what going on. Maybe she already bought it and is trying to throw you for a loop? BRU is having 20% off nursery furniture til the 23rd if you buy it in store. GL

  • I would talk to her about it. Let her know that you are ready to buy and wanted to know if she still wants to contribute. If she says yes ask what her limit is. (Maybe $400 was pushing it to begin with and the extra cost pushed it over)

In any case, $400 for a crib seems like a lot?! Ours was around $200-250, and even then I got the side-eye from a few famly members. LOL

Um, yeah. Ditto all the above. ^^ I have no idea why a crib needs to be that expensive or why you'd pitch a fit over your mom being unwilling to fork over what may easily be half her paycheck. We bought a convertible Graco that's sturdy, attractive and was about $150. I'd say pick a different crib that's easier on the wallet and will give you more use vs. being insistent and stubborn.

Just because someone offers to buy something for your LO doesn't mean you go whole-hog and expect that much from them. It may be that she was hoping that with the holidays coming up, the crib would go on sale.
