Please explain toddler clothing sizes to me

Does the size "24 months" come before 2T? Or are they the same thing? Or does it depend on the brand of clothing? M is in 18 month clothing now, and I'm confused about what comes next.

  • I was confused about this, too when Warner was that size. 24mos does come before 2T. In my experience, 2Ts are longer and just overall bigger than 24mos sizes, but like most things it varies from brand to brand.

this exactly...in our experience we went from 18m to 2t because ds is tall and getting thin...my friends son who is the same age but shorter and a bit meatier did better in 24 months...though like bh said all brands are not the same but that is the general rule

  • Follow-up question:  How long was your kid in the 2T size? When did they go up to 3T?

  • I want to say that some brands didn't have both a 24 mos. and 2T, so I bought whatever I could find.  T seems to have a longer torso, and the 24 mo. shirts definitely started to get too short by the end of summer - I don't think that size was quite long enough for her.  Her 2T summer clothes definitely fit her better by the end of summer than the 24 month ones.

I put T in a few 2T outfits last winter that were gifts, but they were crazy big on her.  She really started to fit the 2T more in late spring (so around 18 mos.), and she still has at least an inch to grow before they start looking odd on her.  Hopefully I can keep her in 2T at least late winter when we start transitioning to a spring wardrobe.

  • DS was in 2T from about 15 months until 21 months(we recently switched to 3T) because of hte length.  the 3T pants are still too big in the waist so i have invested in dapper snappers but he needs it for the length, he is 37 inches. im hoping he gets to stay in teh 3t for a long time!!!
  • 24mo is wide while 2T is long

    I really really wish there was a size b/w 2T and 3T and b/w 3T and 4T!!!

Right now, DD just turned 3 but the 3T shirts are too short on her (and she's average) while the 4T are good length but too wide. I have however discovered the wonderful new (to me) size called 4XS, which is the perfect shirt size, narrow enough and long enough!

As for pants, it varies, there are still some 24mo she can fit into (b/c she's lost a lot of the Buddha belly all babies have, in her 3rd year) and some 4T pants she can also fit into. But for the most part, she's in 3T pants.

DS is 17mo and is mostly in 12-18mo clothing, he's above average weight but just below average for height.

  • I agree with the 24 month v. 2t. As to length of time in there, DD started wearing 2t last winter and wore it through the spring. She still fits in some 2t items at 31 months, but we bought all of her summer clothes this past year in 3t in the hopes we would get two years out of it. At the start of the summer, things were a bit big, but fit perfectly by the end. Fingers crossed they'll fit next year.
  • There's definitely the length factor.

Also, 24m is made to fit better with diapers.  You'll notice that the 24m pants tend to have elastic in the back, but once you get into the "T" sizes, they're more like big-kid pants.

How long you stay in 2T really depends on the kid.  We're going to a 2nd birthday party this weekend, and the kid is in 3T.  J wore a combo of 2T and 3T until maybe a few months ago.  Now she's a solid 3T, and can wear slightly big 4Ts.  Some of her stretchy 24m stuff still fits (like leggings and stuff like that), but we're just about to retire all of it.  Depends on how your kid is built - J is average height, long'ish torso, short'ish legs, and a pretty slim waist.

  • Thanks, this is helpful. M is on the tall side (85% height) and lean (25% weight), so maybe we should get 2T instead of 24 months. I've already put him in a couple of 2T outfits and they fit pretty well, which is kind of frightening.

  • Yeah, 24 months comes before 2T. I always looked at it as they could wear it until they were 24 months (that was the upper range for that size). 2T seems to span the entire second year, though. They don't grow as fast anymore.

  • We completely skipped 24 months b/c DS is super skinny (5-10th percentile) and we needed the skinnier pants.  He moved up to 2T shirts at around 20 months or so, and the pants at right around 2.  He just moved up to 3T pants for this fall, and is between 3 and 4T for shirts.  He was in both 2 and 3T shorts this summer, all adjustable waist.  :-)

  • I've found the 24 months definitely are wider than 2T, which is longer. The 24 months accommodate a diaper better. Fletch has been in 24 months since he was about 10 months. Now, he needs bigger clothes but he's so "solid" in the middle area that 2T is too narrow and don't fit him, so I've had to buy 3T, but they are so long on him. I've had almost as much trouble finding him jeans that fit well as I have had finding jeans for myself.

  • Nothing to add but dang I have a big kid!  He's almost 19 months and in 5T (shirts fit well but the pants are entirely too long and had to be hemmed 4 inches but they fit from the waist to the crotch well meaning he's not wearing hip huggers).
