No WAY. Wow. I will try not to judge, but yikes--didn't she have some major health problems last time around? That has to take a toll on your body, you know?
I just can't believe it. I mean, I hope the best for her health & the health of her baby, but I have a very hard time believing that the parents have time to spend individual, quality time with their kids as-is. There are so many! It seems like the older kids are raising the younger ones at this point.
I was wondering if they were going to have more. I hope she has a healthy pregnancy this time.
I can say I am proud that they are paying their own way and not in debt (even for a house!) and not just having kids b/c they get more welfare money (as some in the system do). I wish I could pay cash for everything and have my house paid off!

I get that they think it's God's plan for them to have so many kids, but it would be truly awful if anything happens to her and their 19 kids are left without a mother.
After pre-eclampsia and having the last baby so early, you'd think they'd be terrified to have another.
Their 19th child was born 3.5 months premature, and with a lot of complications including a perforated bowel, it survived, which is great. In January, one of my close friends had her first baby 3.5 months premature, and with a lot of complications including a perforated bowel, he passed away at 30 days old, which totally sucks. I will be Judgy McJudgerson. The Duggars have 19 children. My friend has none. Life isn't fair, but it still pisses me off.
seriously, someone should slip some BCP in her morning tea.
yep, baby 19 almost didn't make it (LadyWalton - so so very sorry for your friend's terrible loss). i have to wonder how much of mom and baby's health complications were due to mom's baby making parts being tired and overused.
i get their "god wants us to keep having babies" bit and all, but the human body was not made to reproduce annually.
and re: not being on public support - if i recall correctly, they weren't doing so well for themselves until TLC "discovered" them and made them national celebrities. america's appetite for duggar tv is housing and feeding all those kids. i highly doubt they would be working at jobs paying enough to support 20 children on their own without the tv contract.

I wish NBC would stop giving them air time!! she's putting the baby's life in risk and her own life, which is stupid b/c she might leave her other 19 kids motherless. And how interesting that she got pregnant just in time for the new season. Did you hear her say she got an elliptical for her b-day (45th!!) and she works out an hour a day now...who's mothering the kids???
Maybe the reason her 19th baby was born so early is that her uterus can't do it anymore!! Someone needs to cut this woman's tubes and not tell her. Enough is enough!
I believe it's their right to decide how many children they want to have. That being said, imagining a 20th child after such a complicated pregnancy and delivery of their 19th child leaves me puzzled.
I have though this many a time. I totally judge too. Her reproductive parts are worn out. How many times can you stretch a uterus before it breaks??? I think they should be happy with what God has blessed them with already and try to enjoy it and have time to spoil their grandchildren.

I agree...as someone who has experienced the first tri 3 times with only 1 child to show for it(though he is the absolute light of my lift) it angers me that they had so many complications and decided to do it again, its very selfish of them!!
As some one who practices natural family planning, ie - no pills, just charting, I was a little curious about the mathematics of how this is possible when I heard of the family. 20 kids in 23 years means they're averaging less than 14 months between each child, so conceiving about less than 5 months after each child. That's really quick! I have no idea if she's an exclusive breastfeeder but if she is, on average, that should be 6-9 months of natural infertility right there (of course things vary woman to woman). So they're a really fertile couple for her fertility to rebound so quickly, especially at age 45! I think even a couple that put no effort into spacing children, not even NFP, would on average not have so many. They must really be trying over & over or just be one of the most fertile couples in the country!
I think I remember Michelle saying that she's always gotten PG while BFing (except for this time, I suppose). The babies wean themselves from BFing because her milk seems to change once she's PG. I can't imagine having that kind of hyper fertility myself.
I would never choose their lifestyle, but I don't think I want to judge them for it. They support their kids. Most come across as respectful, polite children. The oldest seems to have become a working adult with his own family, the next oldest son seems to have a full time job, and a bunch of the older girls seem to be entering some type of college-type education (when they're not minding the younger ones). Yes, they could spend more time with the family they already have than making the family larger. But I think they have a lot fewer problems than a lot of other people on tv or not. I don't agree with judging her for getting pregnant after having pre-e with one out of 17 or 18 pregnancies because she's had more than enough kids in most people's opinion. Should we turn around and tell the women on this board that they shouldn't consider having more kids if they've had a rough pregnancy, because there are a lot of people who can't even have one?
i'm sorry, i don't want to judge, they seem like a nice family even thought 20 kids is totally not my cup of tea... but i am. this just seems so irresponsible. i thought when they had such major medical scares with their 19th kid they might hang up her uterus for good, but i guess not.
and like a pp, i really question the amount of attention they can give to each child when you have 19. it does appear that the older ones mostly raise the younger ones.
To each his own. This wouldn't be my life choice, but I am not about to question theirs. I've never seen the show, no cable, but the only complaints I ever hear about this family is that they have a lot of children. If that's the worst that gets thrown at them, I think they are doing something right. I know folks question their ability to spend time with each child, but I'll tell ya as a working mom I feel like I cede much of my child rearing to dcp. I don't want to be judged for that. As someone who comes from a collection of large families, the older children do have responsibility for some of the care, but the accountability and raising portion still lands squarely in the parents lap. Older children should contribute to the household, regardless of family size. At least I believe they should. It builds character and responsibility. I agree with PP who said one scary pregnancy shouldn't deter you from trying again. No one here would say otherwise to someone asking for advice in this forum.

I hear what you're saying, but in my opinion I think there's a big difference in trying for a second or third child after a rough pregnancy and trying for #20. At age 45.
I've been thinking about this more, and have decided that I can't judge Michelle Duggar for her reproductive choice, even if it's one I don't understand.
For her sake and the baby's sake, I do hope that everything goes smoothly.

absolutely this. and i think i said that earlier in this thread too.
but i still think they are being wreckless with a baby's life. she didn't have a baby that almost died for no reason. the human body was just not made to reproduce this way. to push it this way, IMO, is wreckless when it means that an innocent life could be destroyed. a pp said she thought it was selfish, and i have to agree.

LOL, I can judge her. And, I do. Hard. HOWEVER, I wouldn't support a law that would stipulate a limit on the number of children. I can judge w/out infringing on her reproductive choice.
Just because I don't agree with what she's doing & I think it's dangerous & a bit reckless (given her age, past pregnancy, how worn out her reproductive parts have got to be) doesn't mean I think she or her husband are bad people.

This is probably flameworthy, but...

And my uterus aches for her.
ladywalton, I am so sorry for your friend's loss. And I share your sentiments.
Why oh why do the Today Show and People keep giving these people air/text space?
If it works for them, then I guess good for them?
Menopause can't be too far around the corner, right?
